Curtin & McCarthy Claim GNAC Executive, SID of the Year Awards

WINTHROP, Mass. – The 2019 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) staff awards have been announced and two members of the Saint Joseph's College athletics department have earned accolades.

Senior Director of Athletics Brian Curtin has been selected as the GNAC Executive of the Year and Assistant Director of Athletics for Communication Corey McCarthy has been named as the GNAC Sports Information Director of the Year. Both individuals earn the awards following a vote of their peers at fellow conference institutions.

The GNAC Executive of the Year honor marks the fourth for Curtin, who will begin his 14th year at the helm of Saint Joseph's athletics this fall. He previously claimed the award in 2012, 2014, and 2016.

In the classroom at Saint Joseph's, the Monks increased their number of GNAC Academic All-Conference honorees for the ninth consecutive year with 115 student-athletes (most in the GNAC) maintaining a 3.25 cumulative grade point average through the 2019 spring semester.

On the field, all 10 of SJC's record-bearing teams made a GNAC Tournament appearance, with the Monks' field hockey, men's soccer, women's soccer and baseball programs capturing conference championships, during the 2018-19 academic year. Including the women's basketball team, which earned an at-large berth into the national tourney, five SJC programs appeared in the NCAA Tournament.

St. Joe's capped the year by winning the 2019 GNAC Men's Commissioner's Cup and finishing as the runner-up in the women's cup standings. The GNAC Commissioner's Cups annually recognize the member institution achieving the highest level of athletic success throughout the academic year. It is based upon a point system and standings are determined by percentages in order to reflect the number of GNAC sports that each member sponsors.

Saint Joseph's also served as the host for the GNAC Men's and Women's Cross Country Championships (for the seventh time since 2007) last fall. In addition, five SJC head coaches were named as the Coach of the Year in their respective sport: Rupert Lewis (field hockey), Jenelle Harris (women's soccer), Adrian Dubois (men's soccer), Mike McDevitt (women's basketball), and Bill Cosentino (men's lacrosse).

McCarthy is named as the GNAC Sports Information Director of the Year for the third time (2009, 2014) after completing his 12th year in the role at Saint Joseph's. During the 2018-19 academic year he helped facilitate 16 conference tournament games – including three championship bouts – as well as the 2018 GNAC Cross Country Championships.

In 12 years at Saint Joseph's, McCarthy has spearheaded numerous efforts to increase the visibility of the Monks' 21 NCAA DIII programs, including the implementation of a strong social media presence, live stats for all home contests and video broadcasts for all games played on campus, and the addition of comprehensive record books.

Key to the growth of the Sports Information Office has been the development of an internship program, which provides worthwhile experiences to SJC students under McCarthy's direction. Over 40 individuals have served as Sports Information interns and many have advanced in their respective field as a result.

McCarthy also serves as the GNAC representative on the NCAA Men's Golf Regional Advisory Committee last year and is the Certificate Coordinator for the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) weekly honors selection committee.

McCarthy garners the annual GNAC honor with help from Megan Dunlap, who this spring completed her first year as Assistant Sports Information Director. The 2018 SJC graduate and three-year Sports Information intern serves as the coordinator of the SJC student event staff and manages the daily operation of the Monks' social media platforms.
