LOOKING BACK #2: STUDENT-ATHLETES HIT THE BOOKS

STANDISH, Maine - In the second installment of our "Looking Back" series we will turn our focus to the Monks' student-athletes and their achievements in the classroom.

Four individuals highlight the academic excellence displayed by SJC athletes last year: baseball senior Jared Gagne (Dover, N.H.), women's soccer senior forward Haley DaGraca (Saco, Maine), and basketball seniors Kelsi McNamara (West Newbury, Mass.) and Darian Berry (Rochester, N.H.) – as each student-athlete garnered national recognition for their work in the classroom.

Gagne was named as a Google Cloud Second Team Academic All-American, DaGraca earned United Soccer Coaches Third Team Scholar All-America honors, and basketball seniors Kelsi McNamara (West Newbury, Mass.) and Darian Berry (Rochester, N.H.) claimed Google Cloud Third Team Academic All-America accolades.

Five teams collected recognition from their respective organizations for academic prowess and an SJC record 115 athletes earned Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) All-Academic accolades – the highest total in the league this year.

Over the coming weeks we will be looking back at incredible academic year that was 2018-19. Collectively last year, Saint Joseph's won four GNAC Championships with five NCAA Tournament appearances and an overall record of 180-83 (.684) and 86-30 (.741) mark in conference play. The Monks' 354 athletes combined to earn nearly 460 individual accolades and, statistically speaking, five Saint Joseph's College teams and 17 individual athletes finished in the top 25 in various NCAA stat categories for their respective sports. Two teams - men's soccer and women's basketball - were nationally ranked virtually all season and both reached the top 10 in the polls while two other programs - field hockey and baseball - received votes in the national rankings. We'll recap it all for the Royal Blue Faithful with similar style announcements, so stay tuned!
