Saint Joseph's Promotes NCAA DIII Week

NCAA President Mark Emmert on DIII Week:

STANDISH, ME – Saint Joseph’s College Athletics is among the numerous institutions from around the nation promoting NCAA DIII Week, which runs April 7th through April 13th.

Several special events will be held throughout the week to go along with a full athletics schedule that sees the Monks’ baseball, softball and women’s lacrosse programs play a total of 12 home contests. The Saint Joseph’s men’s and women’s track & field and men’s lacrosse teams compete in away events during the week.

Special events include free pizza for attendees at the women’s lacrosse Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) game against Emmanuel College at Deering Memorial Stadium on Tuesday night (7:30 PM) and free popcorn for fans at the Monks’ baseball and softball doubleheaders versus Albertus Magnus College on Saturday afternoon (1:00 PM).

The baseball and softball games on Saturday will also feature ceremonial first pitches by college professors. The College’s athletics website – www.gomonks.com – will include a multitude of exclusive video content during the week and fans and followers will notice colorful flyers, highlighting our NCAA DIII athletes, commemorating the event around campus.

Various members of the SJC Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) will be involved with the events held throughout the week.

As part of an NCAA-funded initiative, member schools of the GNAC are conducting Academic Integration events on their respective campuses to discuss the relationship between athletics and academics. In recognition of the initiative, Saint Joseph’s held a panel discussion featuring professors, academic support and student-athletes and video of the event will be available – both cut and uncut - later this week.

Fans are encouraged to interact with the NCAA Division III Twitter and Facebook pages during the week. For each new Facebook “like” or Twitter follower, NCAA Division III will make a donation to Special Olympics.

Division III is the NCAA’s largest division, with 448 member institutions making up 40 percent of the NCAA’s total membership. Over 180,000 student-athletes compete as members of Division III athletic teams. On average, Division III institutions sponsor 18 sports.

Student-athletes do not receive athletic scholarships at the Division III level. NCAA Division III promotes athletic experience, academic accomplishment and leadership/community involvement as part of its founding principles.

ABOUT: NCAA Division III Week is a celebration of outstanding student-athletes. Division III Week is an opportunity for all individuals associated with a Division III institution or conference to recognize the powerful impact of athletics and student-athletes on the campus and surrounding community.

ACADEMIC ACCOMPLISHMENT: In Division III, we realize the classroom is the primary setting for preparing student-athletes. However, Division III also understands academics are more than just GPAs, test scores and majors; it is a comprehensive learning experience that develops successful leaders and professionals.

ATHLETIC EXPERIENCE: Passion and sportsmanship are attributes of the “athlete” in the Division III “student-athlete” paradigm. The “athlete” plays for the love of the game, strives for excellence in all facets of life and perseveres through adversity. So, during Division III Week, celebrate the athletic component of our identity – a true homage to the symbiotic relationship of athletics and higher education.

LEADERSHIP/COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT: Citizenship and responsibility are Division III attributes. Student-athletes “giving back” adds to the comprehensive learning component of Division III Week, while providing a venue for passion and service.
