Burrill Returns to Saint Joseph's College

STANDISH, ME – Athletics Director Brian Curtin has announced that Rick Burrill has been hired as the Head Athletic Trainer at Saint Joseph’s College.

The stint at Saint Joseph’s will be the second for Burrill, who served as the Monks Head Athletic Trainer for two years (2008-10) before accepting a position as the Assistant Athletic Trainer for the Anaheim Ducks of the National Hockey League.

He fills the position vacated by Neil Carroll, who recently departed to pursue other professional opportunities after working as the Monks’ Head Athletic Trainer for four years (2010-14).

Burrill brings over two decades of experience to Saint Joseph’s, with most of his time being logged at various levels of professional hockey, including the International Hockey League, the East Coast Hockey League, the American Hockey League, the United Hockey League, and the NHL.

“We are very pleased to have Rick re-join our staff,” adds Curtin. “Not only does Rick bring a wealth of knowledge and expertise, but he brings the utmost level of professionalism. His high level of communication, whether it is with doctors, colleagues or student-athletes, is second to none.”

Burrill, a Freeport, Maine native and graduate of Northeastern University, began his athletic training career in 1993 when he worked as an assistant with the Portland Pirates and Washington Capitals organization. He went on to serve as the Head Athletic Trainer & Equipment Manager for the Hampton Roads Admirals (ECHL) (1993-96) and as Head Athletic Trainer for the Long Beach Ice Dogs (IHL) (1996-99) before being tabbed as the Los Angeles Kings’ Assistant Athletic Trainer in 1999.

After working with for the Kings for seven years, Burrill moved on to the Anaheim organization and served as the Head Athletic Trainer for the Ducks’ AHL affiliate at the time, the Portland Pirates, for two seasons (2006-08).

During his years working in the professional hockey ranks, Burrill served as an athletic trainer for the ECHL All-Star Game (1994) the IHL All-Star Game (1999) and the NHL All-Star Game (2002) and, in 2006 – while working with the Kings, was honored for having worked in 1,000 professional hockey games. He also worked for several championship clubs during his hockey tenure, including the 2004-05 Colonial Cup Champion Muskegon Lumberjacks and the 2006-07 Stanley Cup Champion Anaheim Ducks.

Burrill, who returned to Maine after his final stint with Anaheim, worked as an Assistant Athletic Trainer for University of Southern Maine, covering field hockey, men’s hockey and baseball, during the 2013-14 academic year.

"My family and I are extremely pleased and excited to be returning to Saint Joseph's College,” says Burrill. “I have very fond memories of my previous time here and of the student athletes and staff members I had the privilege to serve with; many of whom I have continued to stay in touch with over these past years.”

“I look forward to this new beginning and hope to contribute to the development and success of the students, athletes and the athletics program and to be a positive influence within the SJC community."
