WINTHROP, Mass. – The Great Northeast Athletic Conference is pleased to announce its administrative award winners for the 2013-14 academic year, as Saint Joseph’s College of Maine swept the three honors – Executive of the Year, Sports Information Director (SID) of the Year and Athletic Trainer of the Year.

Saint Joseph’s Athletics Director Brian Curtin was named the GNAC Executive of the Year, while Monks’ SID Corey McCarthy earned the honor of GNAC Sports Information Director of the Year. Neil Carroll was named the GNAC Athletic Trainer of the Year following a vote by his peers.

The trio was honored and recognized earlier this week at the 2014 GNAC Professional Development Seminar at Anna Maria College.

Presented annually to members of the GNAC, the award winners are nominated by a colleague within the conference and are then voted on by their administrative peers.

The GNAC Woman of the Year honor, awarded to departed senior Rachelle Messuri (Atkinson, N.H.), a four-year member of the Monks’ field hockey and lacrosse programs, was also given during the awards ceremony. Click here to learn more about the honor

Curtin has served as the Monks athletic director since 2006 and also earned GNAC Executive of the Year honors in 2012. Under Curtin’s watch during the 2013-14 academic year, the Monks’ record-bearing programs posted a 182-80 (.695) collective record, including a 98-27 (.784) mark in conference play, with three GNAC Championships and five title game appearances. Every team advanced to the postseason last year, with nine programs hosting first-round playoff contests, and Saints Joseph’s hosted the GNAC men’s and women’s cross country championships as well as the women’s basketball, baseball and softball championship games in 2014.

Success in the classroom has been equally impressive during Curtin’s time at Saint Joseph’s. The College boasted the most GNAC All-Academic honorees (82) in seven years as a member of the conference and over 100 academic individual and team awards over the past year overall.

McCarthy, who has been with the Monks athletic department since 2007, was also named GNAC SID of the Year back in 2009. In seven years as the Saint Joseph’s SID, McCarthy has spearheaded numerous efforts to increase the visibility of the Monks’ 19 NCAA DIII programs, including the implementation of a strong social media presence, live stats for all home contests and video broadcasts for all games played on campus, and the addition of comprehensive record books. He also played an important role in forming successful partnerships with Presto Sports and Stretch Internet, endeavors which resulted in the creation of www.gomonks.com and www.gomonks.tv, respectively.

Key to the growth of the Sports Information Office has been the development of an internship program, which provides worthwhile experiences to SJC students under McCarthy’s direction. Over a dozen individuals have served as Sports Information interns and many have advanced in their respective field as a result.

Carroll, who came to Saint Joseph’s in the summer of 2010, provided outstanding service to host and visiting athletes alike during his four years as the Monks’ head athletic trainer. Along with Assistant Athletic Trainer Tiffany Miller-Gagnon, he oversaw countless improvements in the training room and played an important role in the teams’ success.

Carroll cordially departed Saint Joseph’s, to pursue other professional opportunities, earlier this summer.
