HOLYOKE, MA - Elms College freshman right fielder Joe
Bergeron (Granville, MA) went 1 for 3 with two RBI in game
one, but St. Joseph 's College (ME) collected a combined 34 hits to
post 10-3 and 12-0 victories in Sunday afternoon's North Atlantic
Conference (NAC) baseball doubleheader at McKenzie Stadium.
Elms College fell to 2-13 overall, 1-5 NAC, while St. Joseph's
extended its winning streak to seven games to improve to 17-7
overall, 6-0 NAC.
In game one, the Monks jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the
first before the Blazers battled back with three runs of their own
in the bottom of the frame behind a RBI single by freshman pitcher
Jim Drummond (Springfield, MA) and a two-run
single by Bergeron.
The Monks plated single runs in the second and third innings to
take a 5-3 lead and then scored two more runs in the fifth and four
in the sixth to pull away.
In the sixth, freshman right fielder Matt Shanahan
(Winchester, MA) hit a two-run double down the left field line. An
outfield error and a RBI sacrifice fly by freshman left fielder
Luke Enman (Milan, NH) capped off the four-run
inning.
Junior pitcher Steve Lambert (Gonic, NH) allowed
three earned runs and struck out five in four innings to earn his
second win of the year.
In game two, the Monks jumped out to a 5-0 lead after two innings
and sophomore pitcher Ben Cutter (Westbrook, ME)
allowed just two hits and struck out seven in four innings to earn
his second victory of the season.
The Monks return to action on Tuesday, April 19 for a
non-conference match-up with Lyndon State (VT) beginning at 3:00
p.m.
