Standish, ME - The Saint Joseph's College baseball
team used a nine-hit offensive attack and solid pitching to defeat
Bowdoin College 9-4 on Monday afternoon. With the non-conference
victory, the Monks improve to 24-5 on the season while the Polar
Bears drop to 12-12.
The Monks got on the board first when Wade Oliver
(Owl's Head, ME) drew a walk to lead off the game for the Monks.
Oliver advanced to second on an error, then scored when
Keil Martin's (Saco, ME) sharp grounder got
through Bowdoin second baseman Chris McCann.
After a scoreless second, the Royal Blue bats went back to work in
the third. Shortstop Luke Enman (Milan, NH) hit a
sharp two-out single to right field followed by a walk to first
baseman Ben Grant-Roy (Biddeford, ME). After a
double-steal, Dustin Spiller (Gorham, ME)
delivered a 2-run single. Spiller quickly swiped second base then
scored on an RBI single by catcher Andrew Wood
(South Portland, ME) to push the Monks lead to 4-0.
In the fourth inning, senior Chris Doughty
(Westbrook, ME) doubled to open the frame. Junior Brian
Schools (Gorham, ME) followed with a walk. Doughty scored
and Schools moved to third on a pair of Bowdoin wild pitches, then
Mark Clapp (Blue Hill, ME) drew a walk. After a
pitching change, Keil Martin was hit by a pitch to
load the bases, setting the stage for Luke Enman.
The standout shortstop proceeded to clear the bases with a towering
grand slam well over the 350-foot marker in right centerfield.
Enman's fifth dinger of the year gave the Royal Blue a 9-0
lead.
Enman wound up 3-5 on the day with 4 RBI. Spiller finished 2-4 with
a pair of RBI.
First-Year hurler Mike Burdin (Gardiner, ME)
evened his record at 1-1 on the mound going seven strong innings.
Burdin ran out of gas in the eighth inning allowing all four
Bowdoin runs on five hits before being lifted. On the afternoon
Burdin went 7+ innings allowing 4 runs on 9 hits, he issued 3 walks
and struck out 2. Sophomore southpaw Cole Filosa
(Milford, MA) inherited a bases loaded jam with nobody out in the
eighth inning. After allowing a walk, Filosa induced two ground
outs and a strike out to end the Bowdoin threat. Andrew
Pooler (Southwest Harbor, ME) finished things off with a
scoreless ninth inning.
"I thought Michael Burdin was outstanding today for us" said head
coach Will Sanborn. "He got into a little bit of trouble at times,
but he kept competing and was able to get out it, I think he just
ran out of gas a little bit in the eighth." When asked about the 4
RBI swing by Luke Enman, Sanborn added "Luke came
through for us with a clutch homerun. He has led our offense all
year long. He is a special player"
After a day off on Tuesday, the Monks will resume their schedule
when theY host Salem State College on Wednesday. The non-conference
match up is set for 3:00 pm at beautiful Larry Mahaney Diamond on
the campus of Saint Joseph's College.
