STANDISH, ME - Saint Joseph's improved to 21-9 with a pair of
one-sided victories over Thomas College on Tuesday evening at Larry
Mahaney Diamond. In the 15-5 opener, Kevin
Chamberlain '11 (Scarborough, ME) tossed six
innings, scattering 11 hits with four earned runs and five
strikeouts to collect the win and is now 2-1 this season. Southpaw
Sam Murray '12 (Walpole, MA)
improved to 3-1 on the year by striking out five with two walks and
six hits allowed in five innings of work in the 8-1 nightcap
triumph. Pat Moran '10
(Winterport, ME) was 6-7 with two home runs, four runs scored and
five runs batted in for the day and Chris
Campbell '11 (Rochester, NH) was 5-7 with three
runs and four RBI in the sweep. The Monks have now won at least 20
games in five consecutive seasons and 18 times in the program's
history.
With an RBI double in the third inning of the first game,
Wade Oliver '09 (Owls Head, ME)
became the 11th player in program history to reach the 100 RBI
plateau.
GAME ONE -
The Monks, who never trailed in the non-conference twinbill, plated
13 of their 15 runs in two big innings in the opener. St. Joe's
started the game with seven runs in the bottom of the first inning.
Ian Lee '11 (Hampden, ME) sent
Campbell and Oliver home with a
double over the head of Terriers center fielder Scott Geel '11
(Calais, ME) and scored himself on a Moran base
hit to put the hosts up 3-0. Mike
Burdin '10 (Gardiner, ME) produced a two-out
single with the bases loaded and Campbell cleared
the bags with a three-run double to complete the scoring in the
frame with the Monks holding a 7-0 lead.
Thomas chipped away at the deficit with single runs in the second
and third innings, but St. Joe's essentially put the game away with
six runs in the bottom of the third. Moran led off
the inning with his fifth long ball of the season and
Campbell and Oliver each notched
an RBI with a single and a double, respectively.
Lee and Moran later recorded RBI
singles and Keneborus plated a run with a grounder
to short to lift the Royal Blue to a 13-2 cushion.
The Terriers managed to score two runs off two hits and an SJC
miscue in the top of the fourth. A 1-6-3 twin killing off the bat
of Kyle Gallant '12 (Veazie, ME) with nobody out helped diffuse the
threat.
The Monks tacked on scores in the fifth and sixth innings to come
away with a 15-5 victory. Moran belted his sixth tater of the year
in the fifth frame and Dan Brown
'12 (Portland, ME/Deering) scored on a Burdin groundout after
recording his first collegiate triple to lead off the seventh.
Moran had a career-high four hits in four trips to
the plate with three runs and four RBI and Campbell was 3-3 with
two runs and a career-best four RBI in the convincing triumph.
Lee went 3-5 with two runs and three RBI, while
Brown and Oliver both scored
twice and Burdin plated a pair for St. Joe's.
Curtis Orlik '12 (Brimfield, MA)
required just seven pitches to record a perfect seventh inning in
relief.
For Thomas, Dana Leland '12 (Alton, ME) and Sam Shain '09
(Hallowell, ME) both produced three hits and two RBI in the loss.
Starter Tom Cameron '12 (Jackson, ME) was tagged for 11 earned runs
and 11 hits with two walks and a strikeout and falls to 0-4 on the
year. Reliever Patrick Rines '09 (Leeds, ME) tossed 3 1/3 innings
and allowed two earned runs on five hits with one punch out.
GAME TWO -
The Monks led 2-0 after one inning, as Campbell
led off the bottom of the first with a beautiful drag bunt for a
hit and scored two batters later when Lee scorched his first home
run of the year off the scoreboard in left.
Oliver kicked off a six-run third inning by
walking, stealing second, advancing to third on a passed ball and
scoring on a fielder's choice off the bat of Ben
Grant-Roy '10 (Biddeford, ME). Moran
singled to send Grant-Roy scrambling home and
Travis Adams '10 (Saco, ME)
doubled to left-center, scoring both Eric
LaBatte '11 (Rochester, NH) and
Moran. Brown singled in
Adams and scored when the next batter, Burdin,
singled to right to give the Royal Blue an 8-0 lead after three
frames.
The Terriers mustered their only offense of the game when Tom
Desjardins '10 (Fort Kent, ME) singled to plate Cory Estes '10 (Old
Town, ME), who reached with a base hit and advanced to second on a
wild pitch.
Adams went 2-2 with a run and two RBI,
Campbell was 2-4 with a run scored, and
Moran continued to swing the bat well by posting a
2-3 effort with a run and an RBI. Mason
Roberge '11 (Franklin, NH) and
Chris Dion '11 (Lawrence, MA)
each worked a scoreless inning in relief to close out the game.
Josh Gray '12 (Eliot, ME) was the lone repeat hitter for the
visitors, having gone 2-3 in the losing effort. Starter Bejay
Perkins '12 (Freeport, ME) suffered the loss after allowing eight
runs and seven hits with two walks and three K's in 2 1/3 innings.
Relievers Tom Babb '12 (North Yarmouth, ME) and Kyle McPherson '10
(Harpswell, ME) both worked scoreless innings in relief.
Saint Joseph's will travel down the road to Gorham on Thursday to
take on Southern Maine in a 3:30 PM contest. Thomas will travel to
Maine-Farmington on Wednesday to take on the Beavers in a North
Atlantic Conference doubleheader starting at 1:00 PM.
