STANDISH, ME – Senior first baseman Ben Grant-Roy (Biddeford, ME) and junior right fielder Todd Keneborus (Hollis Center, ME/Cheverus) both garnered NCAA DIII New England Regional All-Tournament honors for their play in the double-elimination tourney last week.
As the #8 seed in the eight-team tournament, Saint Joseph's defied all odds with three straight elimination-game victories after dropping the first contest, 12-3 to top-seeded Tufts, on Wednesday. The Monks defeated #5 Worcester State, #3 Western New England and #2 Wheaton, effectively ending the 2010 campaign for all three of the New England Region stalwarts, before falling to Tufts, 6-5 in 11 innings, on Saturday, just one game shy of the championship round.
Grant-Roy hit .500 (12-24) and led all tourney participants in hits (12), fielding chances (44) and tied for the most at-bats (24). He ranked second in total bases (13) and was fourth in batting average and RBI (6) for the Monks, who joined Tufts as one of two teams to play five games in the tournament. Grant-Roy, a clutch performer for the Royal Blue during tournament play who also collected GNAC Tournament MVP honors, recorded at least three hits in three games and notched four base-knocks against Wheaton.
Keneborus hit .526 (10-19) with two runs scored and four runs batted in during the tourney. He was tied for second among all players in hits (10) and ranked third in batting average. The junior outfielder entered the tournament leading the Monks with a .456 average and actually raised his team-high mark to .464 (77-166) after posting four multiple-hit efforts, including a 3-3 performance against WNEC, during tourney play.
The 2010 New England Regional Tournament Champions University of Massachusetts-Boston Beacons placed four players on the All-Tournament Team, including Most Outstanding Player Tim Fontaine. The #7 Beacons topped #1 Tufts, 12-6, in the first game of the championship round to gain entry into the NCAA DIII World Series, which begins on Friday in Appleton, Wisconsin.
St. Joe's capped the 2010 campaign with a 35-13 record, with the win-count ranking as the second most in team history behind the 2001 club (38-6), with eight of the 13 setbacks coming by just one run.
