Monks Overwhelm Scots in Fall Day of Games

STANDISH, ME – The St. Joe's Baseball team enjoyed a very successful day of games on Saturday with three convincing wins over Gordon College.

St. Joe's opened the afternoon with a 13-2 triumph over Gordon, with nine of the SJC runs coming in the first inning. The Monks posted an 8-2 win in the sandwich contest and capped the unseasonably warm day with a 6-0 shutout effort.

For the third consecutive year, the SJC Baseball program collected a bounty of non-perishable food donations to be contributed to Catherine's Cupboard Food Pantry in Standish. Players and parents from both teams donated items for the worthy cause.

The Monks outscored the Scots by a whopping 27-4 margin on the day and outhit the visitors 29-11 in the trio of six inning contests. St. Joe's clicked on all cylinders, as the pitching staff posted a sterling 1.00 earned run average with 22 K's and just six walks, the defense committed two miscues in 74 chances, and the SJC baserunners swiped 10 bags without getting caught.

The SJC pitching staff surrendered just one hit in the finale and the Monks' defense did not make an error in the final 12 innings of play.

A trio of seniors stood out for the Monks offensively. Chris Campbell (Rochester, NH) led off the opener with a solo home run over the scoreboard in left field and finished the day with five runs, three hits, two doubles and two RBI. Todd Keneborus (Hollis Center, ME/Cheverus) hit a two-run blast over the right field wall in the first frame of the opener and completed the day with a team-best six runs batted in and Ian Lee (Hampden, ME) was 3-5 with three runs, two stolen bases and an RBI in the triple-header.

St. Joe's utilized nine different pitchers, with each putting in two innings of work in the three-game set. Three hurlers - Sean Drake '13 (Lebanon, ME), Joe Gruntkosky '14 (Peabody, MA) and Ryan Minoty '14 (Augusta, ME) - did not allow a hit, while Tyler Laverriere '13 (Biddeford, ME) and Nick Whittaker '14 (Yarmouth, ME) fanned four apiece for the Monks.
