Campbell Earns Capital One Academic All-District Honors

STANDISH, ME – Saint Joseph's College senior infielder Chris Campbell (Rochester, NH/Spaulding) has received Capital One Baseball All-Academic District 1 honors.

Campbell, a two-time Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) All-Academic honoree, has been voted to the College Division Second Team by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). District 1 includes colleges and universities in New York and New England and the College Division encompasses all DII and DIII institutions in those states.

Campbell, a Finance & Accounting major and team captain for the Monks, is the only player from a GNAC program or Maine institution to receive the academic honor. He is also the first St. Joe's baseball player to collect CoSIDA All-Academic accolades.

Through 40 games this spring, Campbell leads the Royal Blue in batting (.466, 55-118), on-base percentage (.515) and steals (8)and has registered 27 runs, five doubles and 14 RBI. As of May 2nd he ranked eighth in the nation in batting average and 47th in OBP. The three-time All-GNAC recipient currently ranks second in SJC baseball history with a .424 (185-436) batting average.

To be eligible for nomination by a CoSIDA member at their institution, the player must be a starter or important reserve with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.30 at his/her present institution, participate in at least 50 percent of the team's games, and have completed one full calendar year at his/her current institution and has reached sophomore athletic eligibility.

Saint Joseph's defeated Suffolk University, 8-6, in the GNAC Championship game at Larry Mahaney Diamond on Sunday afternoon and will advance to the NCAA DIII Tournament for the fifth time in the last six seasons with the victory and subsequent automatic berth awarded to the conference champion. In preparation for the tourney, the Monks will play at Bowdoin College on Sunday at 12:00 PM and a twinbill at Bates College on Wednesday at 12:00 PM. The New England Regional, which will be played at Whitehouse Field in Harwich, MA, begins on May 18th.

CoSIDA selects Academic All America teams in 12 programs: football, women's volleyball, men's soccer, women's soccer, men's basketball, women's basketball, baseball, softball, men's track & field/cross country, women's track & field/cross country, men's at large and women's at large. A first team, second team and third team are selected in both the University (Division I and I-AA) and College (Division II, III and NAIA) Divisions.
