NCAA Tournament Field Released, St. Joe's to Play Bowdoin in First Round

INDIANAPOLIS, IN — The NCAA Division III Baseball Committee has announced the 56 teams that will compete in the 2012 NCAA Division III Baseball Championship.

Saint Joseph's College (37-5, 14-2 GNAC) has secured the #2 seed in the New England Regional Tournament and will take on #7 Bowdoin College (25-18, 8-4 NESCAC) on Wednesday at Mansfield, Connecticut. The Monks and Polar Bears will meet in the final game of the first day, which is slated to start at 7:45 PM. 

St. Joe's collected the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament after defeating Suffolk University in the conference tournament championship on April 29th. Bowdoin, which fell to Trinity College in the NESCAC Championship on Sunday, has received an at-large bid into the NCAA's.

Sixteen teams across the nation earned a Pool C, or at-large berth, into the national tournament. Pool C qualifiers are teams which did not capture their conference championship but were selected to compete in the national tourney by the NCAA Division III Baseball Committee. 

Six teams will compete at four regional sites and eight teams will compete at four regional sites. All regionals will use a double-elimination format. Thirty-eight conference champions qualified automatically.

Winners of the eight regional tournaments will qualify for the double-elimination championship at Fox Cities Stadium in Appleton, Wis., May 25-29.
