Beacons Blow Past Monks, 11-5

BROCKTON, MA – UMass.-Boston (9-8, 4-0 LEC) scored 11 unanswered runs in the seventh and eighth innings to defeat Saint Joseph's College (14-7, 4-2 GNAC), 11-5, in a non-conference baseball contest at Campanelli Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Saint Joseph's built a 5-0 lead with the help of Mike Pratt (Dartmouth, Mass.) and Joe Coyne (Duxbury, Mass.) RBI doubles in the top of the first and sixth frames, respectively, and a Nic Lops (South Portland, Maine/Cheverus) two-run homer in the seventh. Senior starting pitcher Jimmy Kennedy (York, Maine) kept the Beacons' bats at bay, allowing one run off four hits and a walk with four strikeouts in 6.1 innings.

But the wheels fell off for the Monks in the Beacons' final two turns at the bat, as the Saint Joseph's relief corps had an uncharacteristically tough day in allowing 10 runs. Riley Cox (Westford, Mass.), Corey McNamara (West Newbury, Mass.), Dan Meeken (Marshfield, Mass.) and Chris Bryant (Gray, Maine) combined to surrender seven hits and two walks while UMass.-Boston plated 10 runs en route to defeating Saint Joseph's for the second-consecutive meeting. McNamara, who gave up three runs on two hits and a free pass in 1/3 inning, suffered the loss and falls to 0-2 on the season.

The Beacons also topped the Royal Blue by a 4-2 margin in the Monks' Spring Trip finale in Frostproof, Florida on March 15th.

Offensively for the Monks, Lops went 2-4 with two runs and the aforementioned two-run jack, which was of the inside-the-park variety, and Pratt was 2-3 with a double and an RBI in the losing effort.

For the Beacons, Jose Pena (Boston, Mass.) was 4-5 with a run, two doubles, a homer and three RBI and Matt Consiglio (Southbury, Conn.) went 2-3 with two runs, a double and three RBI. Kyle Thebado (Marlborough, Mass.) launched a three-run homer for the hosts as well.

Reliever Matt Dziok (Southampton, Mass.) claimed the win after tossing 2.1 innings of one-hit ball with a pair of whiffs and Beacons starter Michael Boughton (New Britain, Conn.) yielded five runs (three runs) off seven hits and a free pass with four K's in 6.2 innings.

With nine contests – including six conference tilts - in the next seven days, Saint Joseph's jumps right back into action tomorrow with a trip to Bowdoin College in a 3:30 PM start versus the Polar Bears. UMass.-Boston also returns to action tomorrow when the Beacons travel to Framingham State University for a 3:30 PM non-conference game.
