Baseball Trio Honored by GNAC

STANDISH, ME – The Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) weekly honors have been announced and three Saint Joseph's College baseball players have earned accolades.

Senior pitcher Nick Whittaker (Yarmouth, Maine) is the GNAC Pitcher of the Week for the second-consecutive reporting period while junior catcher Joe Coyne (Duxbury, Mass.) and freshman shortstop Max McCoomb (South Berwick, Maine) have both been listed on the GNAC Weekly Honor Roll for their play in six games last week.

Whittaker allowed an unearned run off three hits while fanning a career-high 13 batters in a 6-1 victory over Anna Maria College on Sunday. The senior righthander is on quite a roll, with no earned runs and just seven hits allowed and a whopping 27 strikeouts over his last 17 innings.

Whittaker, who is currently 3-1 with a 3.66 ERA and 43 strikeouts in 32 innings, leads the conference in K's and K/9 (12.1).

Coyne hit .438 (7-16) with four runs, a double and five RBI in a 5-1 week for the Monks. The junior catcher was 5-6 with two runs, a double and four RBI in a sweep over Albertus Magnus College on Saturday.

As of games played through April 14th, Coyne leads the GNAC in slugging percentage (.551) and home runs (3) and is ranked second in hits (34) and total bases (49).

McCoomb enjoyed a tremendous stretch atop the Monks' lineup, batting .529 (9-17) with a run, three doubles and three RBI while playing excellent defense at shortstop for Saint Joseph's.

The first-year standout is currently hitting .333 (32-96) with 21 runs, seven doubles, nine RBI and a pair of stolen bases in 25 games. He ranks third in the GNAC in hits and at bats and fourth in runs and doubles.

Saint Joseph's (18-8, 9-1 GNAC) will host Husson University in a non-conference contest on Thursday at 3:30 PM.
