#2 Emory Defeats Saint Joseph’s, 12-3

ATLANTA, Ga. - #2 Emory University (3-0) defeated Saint Joseph's College (0-3), 12-3, in what was the Monks' final contest of a three-game southern swing on Monday morning. Senior Joe Coyne (Duxbury, Mass.) went 3-5 and drove in all three of his team's runs in the loss.

Facing the 2014 NCAA DIII World Series runner-up and a team that is currently ranked second in the D3Baseball.com national poll, the Monks showed marked improvement on day three despite the final score. Saint Joseph's racked up 11 hits, the most so far this spring, and played better defense with one error in the setback.

Saint Joseph's scored first, as sophomore Nick Petchell (Milton, Mass.) singled and scored on a Coyne base hit in the third, but the lead was short-lived as the Eagles posted six unanswered runs in the following two innings en route to the nine-run triumph.

The Monks proceeded to tack on single runs in the seventh and ninth innings, as Coyne plated sophomore shortstop Max McCoomb (South Berwick, Maine) on a fielder's choice in the former and knocked in freshman Nick Mangiamelli (Suffield, Conn.) with a base hit in the latter.

Sophomore Taylor Black (Cardiff by the Sea, Calif.), who finished the trip hitting .625 (5-8) with three walks, was 3-3 on the day while junior Taylor Reuillard (Biddeford, Maine) belted his second double of the season and freshmen Mangiamelli and Jacob White (Salem, N.H.) recorded the first hits of their collegiate careers in the losing effort.

Senior southpaw Dan Meeken (Marshfield, Mass.), making just the second start of his career, suffered the loss on the hill after yielding six runs (five earned) off nine hits and a walk with a pair of punch-outs in 3.1 innings. Junior Corey McNamara (West Newbury, Mass.) tossed 1.2 spotless innings and sophomore Tyler Neville (Orono, Maine) fanned all three batters he faced in an inning of relief.

Freshmen Patrick Martin (Wilton, N.H.), Zachary Podurgiel (Norwich, Conn.), Marc Poirier (Lunenburg, Mass.) and Collin Coppinger (Dover, N.H./St. Thomas Aquinas) and sophomore Ben Coleman (Williamstown, Mass.) combined to allow six runs off seven hits and a pair of free passes in two innings of work. Coppinger finished the contest on the mound and hurled a clean 1-2-3 eighth inning.

Saint Joseph's returns to Standish for 10 days before heading south again with a trip to Fayetteville, N.C., where the Monks will play four games in three days, beginning with a 3:00 PM contest versus Frostburg State on Friday, February 27th.
