Monks Blow Past Fighting Scots, 18-3

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – Saint Joseph's College (4-6) routed Gordon College (1-4), 18-3, in RussMatt Central Florida Invitational play on Monday morning. Sophomore shortstop Taylor Black (Cardiff by the Sea, Calif.) went 3-5 with three runs scored to pace the Monks' offense, which racked up a season-high 21 hits in the victory.

After a scoreless first inning, the Monks went to work in the second with five runs off three hits and a trio of Gordon errors and proceeded to score at least one run in each of the following five frames en route to the 15-run triumph.

In all, 13 different SJC players joined the hit parade with seven Monks registering multiple-hit efforts versus the Fighting Scots. Senior pitcher Lincoln Sanborn (Standish, Maine) and sophomore center fielder Dennis Meehan (Gardiner, Maine) both went 2-3 with two runs, a double and three RBI in the victory while junior left fielder Taylor Reuillard (Biddeford, Maine) was 2-4 with a pair of runs, a two-bagger and two RBI and senior catcher Joe Coyne (Duxbury, Mass.) added two hits and a run with a double and two RBI versus Gordon.

Sophomore infielder Brett Barbati (Melrose, Mass.) went 2-4 with two runs and an RBI and junior outfielder Tim Beaudette (Uxbridge, Mass.), who entered the game in the fifth inning, made the most of his opportunity by going 2-2 with a run, a double and three RBI in the slugfest.

On the mound, Sanborn picked up his first win of the young season after tossing five innings of three-hit ball with three strikeouts while throwing just 58 pitches. Freshman Marc Poirier (Lunenburg, Mass.) allowed three runs off four hits with a strikeout in one inning of work and first-year Patrick Martin (Wilton, N.H.) closed out the contest by yielding a hit with a punch-out in an inning of mop-up duty.

Freshman righthander Caleb Bae (Canyon Country, Calif.) took the loss for the Fighting Scots after giving up nine runs (five earned) off nine hits and a walk with four K's in four frames of work. First-year Joseph Nadler (Oak Ridge, N.J.) allowed five runs off five hits and a hit batsman and failed to record an out, while junior righty Larry Torres (Bronx, N.Y.) surrendered two runs off four hits with three K's in two innings and junior Tristan Ryan (Orlando, Fla.) yielded two runs (one earned) off three hits in the final inning of the day.

Saint Joseph's is now 14-1 in the history of the series with Gordon College and has now defeated the Fighting Scots in 13-consecutive meetings dating back to the 1985 campaign.

With a planned day off tomorrow, the Monks return to action with a doubleheader versus Thomas More College on Wednesday. First pitch for opener is slated for 1:30 PM.
