Saint Joseph’s Sweeps Anna Maria, 5-1 & 8-1

STANDISH, Maine – Saint Joseph's College (18-10, 8-2 GNAC) won both ends of a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) baseball doubleheader versus Anna Maria College (8-24, 4-6 GNAC) at Larry Mahaney Diamond on Saturday afternoon. The Monks started the day with a 5-1 triumph and completed the sweep with an 8-1 victory in the nightcap.

THE LEAD

The Monks put both games away with crooked numbers in the sixth inning, as the hosts plated a pair off four hits in the sixth in the first game and broke open a 1-1 stalemate with seven runs off five hits and three errors in the nightcap's penultimate frame. The AMCATS' pitchers held the Monks to just one hit through four innings in both contests.

GAME ONE – SAINT JOSEPH'S 5, ANNA MARIA 1

SJC HIGHLIGHTS

  • Junior designated hitter Jameson Collins (Sandown, N.H.) went 2-3 with an RBI
  • Junior infielder Taylor Black (Cardiff by the Sea, Calif.) was 1-2 with two runs and an RBI
  • Junior center fielder Scott Betts (Peabody, Mass.) doubled

ANNA MARIA HIGHLIGHTS

  • The AMCATS were held to just three hits, as junior catcher Jonathan Roy (Worcester, Mass.) singled and scored a run, sophomore left fielder Camden Brown (Gardner, Mass.) registered a base hit and an RBI, and freshman designated hitter Connor Lavin (Leicester, Mass.) was 1-3

PITCHERS OF RECORD

  • SJC sophomore starter Travis Godbout (Portland, Maine) improved to 4-1 on the season after allowing a run off three hits and two walks with five strikeouts in a complete-game effort
  • Anna Maria freshman starter Matt Elliot (Attleboro, Mass.) falls to 1-4 after giving up five runs (four earned) off seven hits and six walks in 5.2 innings
  • Anna Maria freshman Daniel Chambers (Westfield, Mass.) came on in relief in the sixth and fanned the only batter he faced

KEY PLAYS

  • The Monks got on the board without a hit in the bottom of the first, as Black walked and later scored when junior right fielder Dennis Meehan (Gardiner, Maine) reached on an infield error
  • St. Joe's doubled the lead in the second, when freshman third baseman Noah McDaniel (Eliot, Maine) opened with a walk, moved to third on a Betts two-bagger to left-center, and scored on Black's sacrifice fly to right field
  • Saint Joseph's extended the lead to 3-0 with a run off two hits in the fifth, when senior Nic Lops (South Portland, Maine/Cheverus) walked and eventually scored on a Brett Barbati (Melrose, Mass.) single to left
  • In the bottom of the sixth, the Monks closed their scoring with two runs off four hits and an Anna Maria miscue, as Black and junior shortstop Max McCoomb (South Berwick, Maine) rapped one-out singles, moved up 90 feet on a wild pitch, and scored on a Lops sac fly and a Collins base hit, respectively
  • The AMCATS found the board in the top of the seventh, when Roy singled, moved up on a wild pitch, and scored when Camden brown produced a two-out single to right field

GAME TWO – SAINT JOSEPH'S 8, ANNA MARIA 1

SJC HIGHLIGHTS

  • Meehan was 2-4 with a run and two RBI
  • McCoomb went 2-3 with a run and a pair of RBI
  • Black was 1-3 with two runs and a double
  • Freshman center fielder Travis Gagne (Dover, N.H.) added a single and a stolen base in two at-bats
  • Freshman Greg Emanuelson (Hudson, N.H.) roped a pinch-hit, two-run double

ANNA MARIA HIGHLIGHTS

  • The AMCATS mustered just two hits in the closing contest, as junior shortstop James Marcello (Mansfield, Mass.) and starting pitcher Tanner Jakola (Leominster, Mass.) both singled in the loss

PITCHERS OF RECORD

  • SJC junior starter Nick Malatesta (Wrentham, Mass.) improves to 4-2 this spring after allowing an unearned run off two hits with three K's over six innings
  • SJC senior reliever Riley Cox (Westford, Mass.) allowed a walk and fanned a pair in a scoreless seventh inning
  • Jakola took the loss and falls to 3-3 on the season after giving up eight runs (one earned) off seven hits and three walks with three punch-outs in 5.2 innings
  • Marcello worked the final 1/3 inning and allowed a hit with a foul out to third base

KEY PLAYS

  • The AMCATS claimed their only lead of the afternoon with a run off one hit and an SJC error in the fourth, as sophomore second baseman Nate Gray (Kingston, N.Y.) reached on an error and later scored on a an infield ground out off the bat of Jakola
  • Saint Joseph's evened the score with a run off two hits in the bottom of the fifth, when Black doubled to center with one out and crossed the plate when the following batter, McCoomb, singled to right field
  • In the bottom of the sixth, the Monks enjoyed one of their biggest offensive outbursts of the season by scoring seven runs off five hits and three Anna Maria errors – Emanuelson, pinch hitting with two out, produced the go-ahead hit, a two-run double, while Meehan singled home a pair and McCoomb and Collins added run-scoring base hits

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING

With the sweep, Saint Joseph's improves to 10-2 all-time versus Anna Maria College, a team the Monks have now defeated in six consecutive meetings.

Both teams return to conference play tomorrow afternoon, when Saint Joseph's hosts Albertus Magnus College in a doubleheader starting at 1:00 PM while Anna Maria hosts Suffolk University in a twin bill beginning at 4:00 PM.
