WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – Saint Joseph's College (2-1) fell to Trine University (2-1), 5-3, in RussMatt Central Florida Invitational baseball action on Monday morning.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Monks scored all of their runs in the top of the first inning, when junior right fielder Anthony DiPrizio (Rochester, N.H.) singled with the bases loaded, knocking in Chris Gerossie (Chester, N.H.) and Luke Johnson (East Hampton, Conn.), and freshman third baseman Justin Juliano (Lynnfield, Mass.) plated Ben Gravel (Rochester, N.H.) with an infield hit.
The Monks had just five baserunners in the last eight innings combined, with no more than one in any frame and none advancing past second base as Trine starter Mike Gustin kept the SJC hitters off balance for the duration.
ON THE MOUND:
Sophomore southpaw Roderick Maynard (Baldwin, Maine) allowed three runs (one earned) off three hits and four walks with four strikeouts in 3.1 innings before giving way to senior Marc Poirier (Lunenburg, Mass.), who took the loss after yielding two runs off four hits with four punch-outs in 3.1 innings of relief. Sophomore Simon Gonzalez (Peabody, Mass.) closed out the game and allowed one hit in 1.1 innings of work.
Gustin gave up three runs off five hits and four walks with seven strikeouts over eight innings. Gordon Wallace earned the save after fanning one and walking one in an otherwise clean ninth frame.
OFF THE BAT:
- Gerossie reached base three times and was 1-2 with a double and a run scored
- DiPrizio was 1-4 with a double and a pair of RBI
- Juliano went 1-2 with an RBI single and a walk
- Trine catcher Kevin O'Malley went 2-4 with a run and two RBI
- Trine designated hitter Thomas Rivet was 2-3
NEXT:
Saint Joseph's is back in action tomorrow with a single nine-inning game versus St. John Fisher. First pitch is slated for 9:00 AM.
