STANDISH, Maine – Saint Joseph's College (21-8) bested Mitchell College (21-6), 4-2, in a battle between a pair of regionally ranked teams at Larry Mahaney Diamond on Saturday afternoon. In last week's New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association (NEIBA) Poll, Mitchell was ranked sixth and Saint Joseph's was right behind in seventh.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Saint Joseph's senior starter Travis Godbout (Portland, Maine) sat down the first 13 batters he faced as his perfect game bid ended with one out in the fifth when junior third baseman Steven Pagan (Oceanside, Calif.) reached on an infield error. The no-hit effort was dashed when the following batter, junior Peter Abate (Wallingford, Conn.), singled up the middle.
The Monks registered three-quarters of their offense in the bottom of the second, when the hosts plated three runs off four hits, including an RBI single by freshman second baseman Justin Juliano (Lynnfield, Mass.).
The Mariners proceeded to close the gap with two runs off three hits with two out in the top of the sixth, when senior shortstop Garet Griffin (Moosup, Conn.) roped an RBI triple to left field and scored when the following batter, senior first baseman James Rangel (North Bergen, N.J.), singled to center.
St. Joe's managed to gain some breathing room in the seventh, when junior shortstop Joey Murphy (Derry, N.H.) singled, stole second, and scored on a single off the bat of junior Greg Emanuelson (Hudson, N.H.).
ON THE MOUND:
- Godbout improved to 5-1 on the season after giving up two runs on four hits with three strikeouts and no walks in six innings; for Godbout, the victory counts as the 15th of his collegiate career
- Sophomore Weston Bergeron (Lyman, Maine) allowed a hit and fanned one in an inning of relief
- Freshman Zach Begin (Georgetown, Mass.) struck out a pair in a perfect relief frame
- Senior Josh Partridge (Deerfield, N.H.) picked up his fourth save of the season – and 11th of his career - with a pair of punch-outs in the seventh inning
- Mitchell senior starter Bryton Ferris (Manchester, Conn.) suffered the loss and falls to 5-2 on the season after yielding three runs off five hits with two K's over three innings
- Sophomore Jakari Pellegrini (New Britain, Conn.) struck out four and allowed a hit with two walks in three innings of work
- Junior Bryce Bedard (Ledyard, Conn.) gave up a run off three hits with four K's over two innings
OFF THE BAT:
- Senior catcher Jacob White (Salem, N.H.) was 2-4 with a pair of singles
- Junior center fielder Jared Gagne (Dover, N.H.) went 2-5
- Murphy was 1-5 with a run and a stolen base, his 20th swipe of the season; he is the first SJC player to pilfer 20 bags since Matt Vanderburgh stole 20 in 2001 and just the fifth in team history to take 20 bases in a season
HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:
With the win, Saint Joseph's improves to 2-0 in the history of the series with Mitchell College, a team the Monks defeated by a 9-2 score in the 2014 NCAA Regional on May 16th of that season.
