Baseball 2022 Class Announced

Baseball 2022 Class Announced

STANDISH, Maine – Head Coach Will Sanborn is pleased to announce the baseball Class of 2022.

This spring, Sanborn, guided the Monks to a 29-13 overall record with a 10-4 conference mark en route to earning the #2 seed in the GNAC Tournament. The Monks, selected as a predetermined host for the 2018 tourney, opened postseason play with a 9-5 loss to #3 Johnson & Wales University on May 3rd and fought their way into the GNAC Championship with elimination-game triumphs over Lasell College and Johnson & Wales before falling to top-seeded Suffolk University, 6-5, in the title game on May 6th.

Heading into his 27th year leading the Monks, Sanborn has accumulated 23 winning seasons and 20 championships and notched his 700th victory during the 2018 campaign. Sanborn is the 37th NCAA DIII Baseball coach to reach the plateau and one of only six New England Region skippers to hit the mark.

The 10-player Class of 2022 - which features six pitchers, two outfielders, and a pair of infielders – figures to bring talent and depth to the Monks' roster, which saw seven student-athletes leave via graduation in May. Many of the newcomers could contribute immediately in a variety of roles as the traditionally strong program looks to return to NCAA postseason play after a four-year absence, an unusual scenario for a team that advanced to the national tournament eight times in the previous nine seasons.

Six of the seven departed seniors saw time on the mound last spring and combined to notch 116 strikeouts with a 4.16 ERA over 116.2 innings during the 2018 season. Perhaps the most challenging hurler to replace is departed southpaw Josh Partridge '18, the 2018 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Pitcher of the Year who posted a 2.45 ERA with a 5-2 record and six saves while fanning 56 and holding opponents to a .215 batting average over 44 innings and 23 appearances (new SJC single-season record) last season.

"We are expecting this year's class to push our upperclassmen and compete for starting positions right away," adds Coach Sanborn. "Many of these players were highly recruited and we are thrilled that they have chosen Saint Joseph's to pursue their degree and further their baseball careers. They are talented on the field and fit into the SJC baseball culture as strong students and hard workers."
