Monks take two from Hornets on opening day

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – Saint Joseph's College (2-0) kicked off the 2019 campaign with a pair of victories over Northern Vermont - Lyndon (1-9) on Sunday afternoon. The Monks opened the season with a 9-6 victory and completed the sweep with a 10-5 nightcap triumph.

GAME ONE: Saint Joseph's 9, Lydon  6

The Monks jumped out the gates with three runs off three hits in the bottom of the first inning. Senior shortstop Joey Murphy (Derry, N.H.) reached first off an error and reached third after a single by sophomore center fielder Hunter Richardson (North Monmouth, Maine) who stole second and advanced to third when the following batter, senior outfielder Jared Gagne (Dover, N.H.) singled up the middle allowing Murphy to score and then stole second. Senior catcher Greg Emanuelson (Hudson, N.H.) then produced a two-run double to lift their team 3-2.

St. Joe's tacked on a pair of runs in the second and plated five off five when Murphy grounded out to shortstop scoring McDaniel and Gange scored Johnson off an error by the Hornet's first baseman in the bottom of the second. In the bottom of the fourth SJC tacked on two more when Richardson singled scoring Johnson and Emanuelson with another two-run double after Hornet pitcher walked two. Richardson then topped off the game with a homer in the bottom of the seventh.  

 

ON THE MOUND:

Senior starter Grayson Jennings (Mililani, Hawaii)  tossed just over two innings allowing four hits and five runs. Juniors Troy Bogdahn (Hollis, Maine) would get the win after pitching two innings and allowing three hits and a run while Jonathan Rolf (Plainville, Mass.) earned the save.

OFF THE BAT:

  • Emanuelson went 2-3 with batting in four runs

  • Richardson was 3-4 with two runs batted in and a solo homerun

  • Johnson was 1-2 scoring twice

 

GAME TWO: Saint Joseph's 10, Lyndon 5

Sophomore Dylan Fournier (South Windsor, Conn.) kicked off the top of the second when he singled to right advancing the runner when freshman Ronan Chisholm (North Chatham, Mass.) singled through left scoring Gonzalez, next was Matthew Martinello (Woodbridge, Conn.) who doubled with an RBI, next sophomore Justin Juliano (Lynnfield, Mass.) reached on a fielder's choice and earned the RBI, soon both Murphy and Richardson would single and earn runs batted in and Emanuelson would top the inning off by reaching to first on a Hornet error earning himself a RBI.

In the top of the third Martinello would get the only hit but a run would score after a couple of Monks were walked. Due to more Lyndon errors Emanuelson will add another run to bord. Chisholm added a hit and Juliano would hit the RBI in the sixth inning. Sophomore Kevin Aylward (East Bridgewater, Mass.)would get a hit in the seventh and would be driven in by sophomore Mattingly Simaan (Mahopac, N.Y.).

 

ON THE MOUND:

Freshman Matt Bergeron (Salem, N.H.) would collect his first collegiate win allowing seven hits and four runs in just over four innings.

OFF THE BAT:

  • Chisholm was 2-2 with a pair of runs and an RBI

  • Martinello was 2-4 with a run and an RBI

 Saint Joseph's will face Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute tomorrow at 10:00 AM.
