AUBURNDALE, Fla. – Saint Joseph's College (3-0) toppled RPI (1-2), 12-3, in a non-conference baseball contest in the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational at Lake Myrtle Park on Monday afternoon.
The Monks stole 11 bases – the team's most since stealing nine versus Anna Maria last season (4/13/18) - as six different players pilfered at least on bag in the one-sided victory. The team record for steals in a game, 14, was achieved versus UMaine-Presque Isle on April 14th, 1991.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Monks faced a 1-0 deficit after three full frames and tied the game in the top of the fourth when sophomore center fielder Hunter Richardson (Monmouth, Maine) led off with a single, stole second, and later scored on a Greg Emanuelson (Hudson, N.H.) base hit. Saint Joseph's took the lead for good, as it played out, with four runs off three hits in the fifth when freshman third baseman Ronan Chisholm (North Chatham, Mass.) scored on a Jared Gagne (Dover, N.H.) sac fly and Matthew Martinello (Woodbridge, Conn.), Joey Murphy (Derry, N.H.), and Richardson scampered home on wild pitches.
Chisholm notched an RBI single in the sixth and Emanuelson scored on a passed ball in the seventh to stake the Monks to an 8-2 lead and Emanuelson roped a two-run double as part of a four-run eighth inning to account for the 12-3 final.
ON THE MOUND:
SJC sophomore starting pitcher Zach Begin (Georgetown, Mass.) fanned six batters and allowed two runs off four hits and a walk over 5.1 innings to pick up the victory while Matt Poff (Pelham, N.H.), Jonathon Rolfe (Plainville, Mass.), and Jonathan Marchia (Chicopee, Mass.) combined to strike out four batters while fiving up a run off four hits and a free pass over 3.2 innings of relief.
RPI employed six pitchers in the setback with Thomas Neuman taking the loss after yielding four runs off four hits and a walk in one inning of work.
OFF THE BAT:
- Murphy was 2-4 with a run, a stolen base, and an RBI and was the Monks' lone repeat hitter
- Gagne went 1-3 with a pair of runs and tied a program record with four stolen bases
- Chisholm was 1-2 with two runs and a pair of steals
- RPI left fielder Jake Dafayette went 3-4 with a run scored and was the Engineers' only repeat hitter
HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:
With the victory, Saint Joseph's improves to 1-2 all-time versus RPI.
