WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – Saint Joseph's College (8-0) swept a doubleheader with Gordon College (0-5) in RussMatt Central Florida Invitational action on Saturday evening. The Monks opened with an 8-0 triumph and completed the sweep with a 10-2 victory.
SAINT JOSEPH'S 8, GORDON 0:
Senior starter Grayson Jennings (Mililani, Hawaii) was dominant and the Monks scored at least one in each of the first four innings in the one-sided opening win.
In the bottom of the first, senior shortstop Joey Murphy (Derry, N.H.) led off with a double and later scored on a passed ball and senior catcher Anthony DiPrizio (Rochester, N.H.) singled and proceeded to score on an error in the second frame.
St. Joe's tacked on three runs off three hits in the bottom of the third, when senior right fielder Jared Gagne (Dover, N.H.) notched an RBI single and later scored on a wild pitch and sophomore center fielder Hunter Richardson (Monmouth, Maine) walked and raced home on a passed ball to make it a 5-0 game.
The Monks completed the game scoring with three runs off three hits an error in the bottom of the fourth. Freshman third baseman Ronan Chisholm (North Chatham, Mass.) kicked off the inning with a double to right field and promptly scored when Murphy tripled to left and also scored on an error. Richardson worked another free pass, stole second, and crossed the plate on a passed ball to extend the SJC lead to 8-0.
ON THE MOUND:
Jennings was outstanding in his second start of the season, tossing six shutout innings while yielding just two hits and striking out six batters. Freshman Alex D'Angelo (Peabody, Mass.) fanned a pair in a perfect inning of relief.
Gordon starter Garrett Poole took the loss after giving up eight runs (two earned) off eight hits and three walks with three K's in three innings.
OFF THE BAT:
- Murphy went 3-3 with three runs, a double, a triple, a stolen base, and an RBI
- Junior second baseman Drew Healey (Rochester, N.H.) was 2-2 with a walk
- Richardson scored two runs with a stolen base and a pair of walks
SAINT JOSEPH'S 10, GORDON 2:
Saint Joseph's grabbed a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, when Murphy led off with a walk, stole second, and later scored on a first-and-third double steal. Richardson singled, swiped second, and proceeded to score on a Gagne sac fly.
The two-run lead remained until the top of the seventh, when the Monks plated eight runs off six hits and a Gordon error. Sophomore second baseman Luke Johnson (East Hampton, Conn.) tripled home a pair and scored on a passed ball and three runs scored on a misplayed ball off the bat of senior Noah McDaniel (Eliot, Maine) to make it an 8-0 game. Chisholm posted an RBI single and scored when the following batter, sophomore left fielder Dylan Fournier (South Windsor, Conn.), doubled to right-center.
The Fighting Scots managed to score two runs off two errors in the bottom of the seventh to complete the game scoring.
ON THE MOUND:
Freshman Matt Bergeron (Salem, N.H.) tossed four one-hit innings with one strikeout to improve to 2-0 on the season while Weston Bergeron (Lyman, Maine), Jonathan Marchia (Chicopee, Mass.), and Troy Bogdahn (Hollis, Maine) combined to allow two unearned runs off one hit and four walks with five strikeouts over three innings of relief.
Gordon starter Mark Gadaleta was hit with the loss after allowing five runs (four earned) off five hits and a walk with nine strikeouts in 6.1 innings.
OFF THE BAT:
- Richardson was 3-4 with two runs and a stolen base
- Fournier went 2-2 with a run, a double, and an RBI
- Murphy scored a run and stole three bases
- Gagne was 2-3 with a run, a stolen base, and an RBI
HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:
With the sweep, Saint Joseph's improves to 16-1 all-time versus Gordon College and has now defeated the Fighting Scots in 15 consecutive meetings dating back to the 1985 season.
