2009 Field Hockey Team Awards Announced

STANDISH, ME - Head Coach Rupert Lewis has announced the 2009 Saint Joseph's College Field Hockey team awards. Five individuals were honored at a ceremony held at the SJC Chalet on Sunday, December 13th.

Kimberly Glynn '10 (Danvers, MA) received the Most Valuable Player award, Stephanie Lombardo '13 (Steep Falls, ME) collected Most Improved Player honors, Melanie Allen '13 (Jackson, NH) was named as the team's Rookie of the Year, and Sarah Bartell '12 (Exeter, NH) and Alyssa Dunn '11 (Standish, ME) share the 2009 Coaches Award.

For Glynn, the team MVP award is the third of her illustrious career. An All-NAC Second Team selection as a senior, Glynn led the conference in defensive saves (9) for the second straight season and closes out her career with a program-best 26 defensive saves. Her defensive skills will certainly be missed next season.

Lombardo enjoyed a solid freshman campaign with 3 goals and 3 assists for 9 total points, which ranked as the fifth-highest total on the team.

Allen played in all 18 games and made 7 starts as a freshman in 2009. Both of her goals were game-winners, as the rookie helped the Monks defeat Salem State and Endicott.

Bartell and Dunn share the Coaches Award after posting successful 2009 efforts. Bartell, who shared the Rookie of the Year honor last season, ranked third on the team in assists (5) and points (11) and also netted a pair of game-clinchers as a sophomore. Dunn, also a Rookie of the Year recipient as a frosh, dealt 8 assists, the second-highest total on the squad, and punished opposing forwards all season as one of the top defenders in the North Atlantic Conference.

Saint Joseph's posted a 14-4 record overall and went 7-0 in NAC play to earn the #1 seed in the conference tourney. The Monks' season came to an abrupt end when #4 Husson defeated St. Joe's, 2-1, with a strokeoff victory in the semifinal round of the playoffs.
