Monks Top Beavers, Remain Perfect in NAC Play

STANDISH, ME - Saint Joseph's (7-1, 3-0 NAC) topped in-state rival University of Maine-Farmington (4-4, 2-1), 2-1, in a North Atlantic Conference Field Hockey match at Lakeside Field on Monday afternoon. Jillian Kimball '10 (Albany Township, ME) netted the game-clincher in the 41st minute and Monks keeper Meaghan Johnson '12 (Portland, ME/Cheverus) made three saves in the win.

The Beavers took a 1-0 lead when Alyssa St. Pierre '10 (Jay, ME) snuck a shot into the bottom left corner of the net past Johnson in the eighth minute of play. UMF midfielder Ashley Wentworth '10 (North Berwick, ME) recorded an assist on the play.

The one-goal cushion stood until Julia Ostrowski '10 (Albany, NY) netted her team-leading ninth goal of the year at the 24:35 mark. The swift senior evaded a Farmington defender and slammed a shot to the middle of the net past UMF netminder Felisha Taylor '13 (Chelsea, ME) to knot the game at one apiece.

Kimball's game-winner came in the sixth minute of the second stanza. The athletic defender dribbled to the top of the circle and belted a hard shot to the left corner of the goal.

The Monks maintained the slim cushion for the final 24 minutes of play, as a stifling SJC defense didn't allow a UMF shot on net for the remainder of the contest.

Saint Joseph's held the edge in shots (8-7) and penalty corners in the triumph.

St. Joe's will host University of Southern Maine on Thursday at 3:30 PM, while UMF is set to host NAC rival Husson University on Wednesday at 4:00 PM.
