Monks Blank Rams in 2010 Opener, 2-0

FRAMINGHAM, MA – Saint Joseph's College (1-0) opened the 2010 campaign with a 2-0 victory over Framingham State (0-1) on Thursday afternoon. Kayla Nowell '11 (Bridgton, ME) netted the eventual game-winning goal just over five minutes into play and SJC keeper Meaghan Johnson '12 (Portland, ME/Cheverus) made five saves in the shutout effort.

Sarah Bartell '12 (Exeter, NH) tallied the Monks' second goal late in the second half off an Olivia Tourangeau '12 (Old Orchard Beach, ME/McAuley) pass. St. Joe's controlled the pace of the game and outshot the Rams by a 17-6 margin, including a 10-1 mark in the second half. The Monks also held a 6-3 edge in corners in the triumph.

In just over three seasons, Nowell has nine game-clinching goals and is tied with Julia Ostrowski '10 for the SJC career record. Johnson, a junior, also tied a program record with the shutout effort, which was the 10th of her career. Laura Lombardi '02 registered 10 shutouts in four years for St. Joe's.

Framingham netminder Allesha Kenyon '11 (Westford, MA) made 13 saves in the losing effort. With the victory, Saint Joseph's improves to 6-3 all-time against Framingham. The Monks topped the Rams, 3-2, in the last contest between the teams, which was played in Standish on October 24th, 1999.

The Monks will host Lasell College on Saturday, September 11th at 1:00 PM, while Framingham will play at UNE on Tuesday at 7:00 PM.
