BIDDEFORD, ME - Courtney
Rague '11 (Old Orchard Beach, ME) converted a pass from Melanie Allen '13
(Jackson, NH) with just under eight minutes remaining to give Saint
Joseph's College a 2-1 non-conference field hockey victory over
University of New England Tuesday afternoon.
The Monks stay undefeated on the young season with the win,
improving to 3-0. With their second straight setback, the
Nor'easters drop to 2-3 overall.
Rague set up classmate Kayla Nowell (Bridgeton, ME)
midway through the first half to start the scoring and put the
visitors in front, 1-0.
UNE sophomore Emily Koehler (Pelham, NH) evened things up 8:16
later with her first career goal, collecting a rebound off of the
second defensive save of the match for St. Joe's defender Brittany Locke '13 (Waterville,
ME) and slipping the ball into the open net.
The teams played the next 36 minutes without a goal, before Rague
slapped home the game-winner.
The Nor'easters fired off 13 of their 17 shots before halftime,
only to see the Monks' Meaghan Johnson '12
(Portland, ME/Cheverus) steer away 10 of the attempts. For the
game, the junior goalie recorded 13 saves.
Senior Ayla Nelson (Auburn, MA) posted nine stops in a losing
effort for UNE, which travels to Salve Regina University Saturday
(6 p.m.).
St. Joe's also returns to action Saturday, squaring off against
FDU-Florham in New Jersey (5 p.m.).
