Nowell Breaks Two Program Records in USM Win

STANDISH, ME – Field Hockey senior Kayla Nowell (Bridgton, ME/Lake Region) has broken the Saint Joseph's program career-records for goals and game-winning goals.

With a marker early in the first half against Southern Maine on Thursday, Nowell surpassed former teammate Julia Ostrowski '10 as the program's career goals leader. Nowell, who was sprung free with a pass from fellow senior Courtney Rague (Old Orchard Beach, ME), scored the historic goal on a breakaway at the 11:07 mark to put the Monks up 2-0. She also added an assist in the victory, which was recorded as the first triumph over USM in Saint Joseph's Field Hockey program history.

The marker, which wound up as the game-clincher over the Huskies, also pushed Nowell into the program's all-time lead for game-winning goals (10). Ostrowski held the previous career-high with nine winners in four seasons.

Nowell, a two-time First Team All-NAC and NFHCA All-Region selection, has registered 47 goals, 27 assists and 121 points in 64 career games. Currently, she ranks as the program's all-time leader in goals, game-winning goals, and shots (284) and trails only Ostrowski in career points (131) and assists (39). Ostrowski tallied 46 goals, 39 assists and 131 points in 73 career games.

The senior forward owns or shares five SJC single-season records, with all five being set during a brilliant 2008 campaign. Nowell's season bests include goals (21), assists (15), points (57), game-winners (5) and shots (122).

Saint Joseph's (4-2, 1-0 NAC) will face NAC rival Husson University (2-3, 0-0 NAC) in Bangor on Saturday at 1:00 PM.
