2010 Field Hockey Team Awards Announced

STANDISH, ME – SJC Field Hockey Head Coach Rupert Lewis has announced his team awards for the 2010 campaign.

Five individuals were honored as four accolades were given at the team awards banquet, which was held on January 23rd in the Chalet on the Saint Joseph's campus. Honors bestowed included the Coaches' Award, Rookie of the Year, Most Improved Player and Most Valuable Player.

Junior tri-captain Sarah Bartell (Exeter, NH) was named as the team's Coaches' Award honoree after registering seven goals and 15 total points last fall. Bartell started all 19 games for the 13-6 Monks and tallied a pair of game-winning goals during her third collegiate campaign.

Rachelle Messuri '14 (Atkinson, NH) was selected as the Monks' 2010 Rookie of the Year and tallied three goals and seven total points in her first NCAA season. Messuri appeared in all 19 contests and made four starts last fall.

The 2010 Most Improved Player honor was awarded to another outstanding freshman – defender Meghan Carr (Topsham, ME), who played in all 19 games and started 14 as a key member of the Monks' stout defensive front in 2010.  

Junior goalkeeper Meaghan Johnson (Portland, ME/Cheverus) and sophomore midfielder Melanie Allen (Jackson, NH) share the 2010 Most Valuable Player accolade. Johnson, a team tri-captain and First Team All-NAC selection last fall, started 18 games in net for the Monks with a 1.29 goals against average and a .842 save percentage in 2010. Allen started all 19 games and netted five goals and 12 total points as a second-year player.

Saint Joseph's went 13-6 overall and 7-0 in North Atlantic Conference play last season under Coach Lewis, who has served as the SJC skipper for six seasons. The Monks collected the top seed in the NAC Tournament and posted a flawless record in conference tilts for the second consecutive season last fall.
