PAXTON, MA – Saint Joseph's College (2-0) defeated Anna Maria College (1-3), 3-0, in a non-conference field hockey contest on Saturday evening. Freshman goalkeeper Emma Astbury (Woodstock, Vt.) made a pair of saves to post her first collegiate shutout.
The Monks dominated the stat sheet and held sizeable advantages in both shots (20-5) and corners (16-4), but were held without a goal until the 57th minute when freshman Kelsey Dumond (Lewiston, Maine) netted her first collegiate marker off a deflected shot from senior Carley Denis (Lewiston, Maine).
Saint Joseph's went on to score a pair of goals over the following eight-plus minutes to account for the 3-0 final. Junior Effie Drew (Portland, Maine) lifted the Monks to a 2-0 cushion when she scored following a scrum near the AMCAT goalmouth at the 59:59 mark and senior Rachelle Messuri (Atkinson, N.H.) added her third goal of the young season with 5:17 remaining.
Sophomore Meghan Williams (Greenland, N.H./St. Thomas Aquinas) earned an assist on the Drew score and senior Theresa Hendrix (Scarborough, Maine/Cheverus) was credited with a helper on the Messuri marker.
Anna Maria keeper Mary Kate Breen (Londonderry, N.H.) made six saves in a losing effort.
Saint Joseph's improves to 9-2 in the history of the series with Anna Maria College with today's victory. The Monks have now defeated the AMCATS in seven-consecutive meetings dating back to the 2006 campaign.
Saint Joseph's plays at Johnson & Wales University on Sunday at 1:00 PM while Anna Maria hosts Rivier University at 4:30 PM on Tuesday.
