Monks Blow Past Pilgrims, 7-1

HENNIKER, N.H. – Saint Joseph's College (3-1) routed New England College (0-9), 7-1, in a non-conference field hockey match on Saturday afternoon. Senior forward Effie Drew (Portland, Maine) registered her first collegiate hat trick with three goals in the one-sided contest.

Drew's three-goal performance is the 17th in program history and the first since Sarah Bartell '12 netted three markers against Rivier University on September 25th, 2011.

The Monks employed goals from Drew, junior Meghan Williams (Greenland, N.H./St. Thomas Aquinas), junior Amanda Celata (Dedham, Mass.) and senior Theresa Hendrix (Scarborough, Maine/Cheverus) in building a 4-0 first half lead. Sophomore Kelsey Dumond (Lewiston, Maine) opened the second stanza scoring with a tally 2:47 into the final frame and Pilgrims senior midfielder Patricia Wright (Essex, Mass.) made it a 5-1 game with the hosts' lone goal, which was netted at the 43:54 mark.

Drew closed out the game scoring with goals at the 47:11 and 50:55 time stamps.

Saint Joseph's held noticeable advantages in shots (36-1) and penalty corners (25-1) in the victory. New England freshman keeper Michaela Clark (Dorchester, Mass.) made a career-high 24 saves in the losing effort.

With the triumph, Saint Joseph's improves to 4-2 all-time versus New England College, a program the Monks defeated by a 2-0 score in Standish last fall.

Saint Joseph's begins a three-game home stand with a match against non-conference foe Salem State on Tuesday at 3:30 PM. New England College hosts Bridgewater State University on Wednesday in a non-conference tilt scheduled to start at 1:00 PM.
