Monks Blank Vikings, 4-0

STANDISH, Maine – Saint Joseph's College (4-1, 1-0 GNAC) blanked Salem State University (1-6, 0-2 LEC), 4-0, in a non-conference field hockey match at Mercy Field on Tuesday afternoon. Senior Effie Drew (Portland, Maine) scored a pair of goals in the victory.

The Monks wasted little time getting on the board, as Drew potted her first of the afternoon on a penalty corner injected by junior Amanda Celata (Dedham, Mass.) just 3:38 into play. The 1-0 edge held true until 1:04 had elapsed in the second stanza, when Drew scored her second of the day off a Kelsey Dumond (Lewiston, Maine) pass.

It looked as though the 2-0 score would remain for the duration, but Saint Joseph's managed to score twice in the closing 74 seconds to account for the 4-0 final. Freshman Bailey Cutler (Lisbon Falls, Maine) scored off a Theresa Hendrix (Scarborough, Maine/Cheverus) feed with 1:14 remaining and first-year Hayley Winslow (Falmouth, Maine) tallied her second marker of the season off a penalty corner after time expired.

Salem State sophomore goalkeeper Carolyn Woodin (Arlington, Mass.) played very well and made 17 saves in the losing effort. Saint Joseph's sophomore netminder Emma Astbury (Bridgewater, Vt.) was untested in the lopsided contest.

Overall, Saint Joseph's held considerable advantages in shots (30-0) and penalty corners (17-1) in the victory. With the victory, St. Joe's improves to 5-1 all-time versus Salem State and has now topped the Vikings in three-consecutive meetings dating back to the 2012 season. The four-goal spot by the Monks today is the most netted by either team in a single game in the history of the matchup.

Saint Joseph's is set to host in-state rival Southern Maine at 4:00 PM on Thursday while Salem State is off until Saturday when the team travels to Worcester State University for a 2:00 PM Little East Conference contest.
