Monks Gallop Past Mustangs, 9-0

STANDISH, Maine – Freshman midfielder Bailey Cutler (Lisbon Falls, Maine) scored a team-record four goals to help Saint Joseph's College (10-1, 4-0 GNAC) topple Mount Ida College (4-7, 0-4 GNAC), 9-0, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) field hockey match at Mercy Field on Saturday afternoon.

Cutler scored three times in the first half – including a pair within 31 seconds in the 35th minute – and added her fourth off a corner 4:01 into the second stanza to become the first player in the 20-year history of the Monks' field hockey program. Previously, an SJC player had scored three goals in a single contest on 17 occasions.

Junior Amanda Celata (Dedham, Mass.) kicked off the game scoring in the 14th minute with an unassisted tally and set up the Monks' second tally with a feed to Cutler at the 18:10 mark. Senior Effie Drew (Portland, Maine) made it a 3-0 game just 15 seconds later and sophomore Kelsey Dumond (Lewiston, Maine) potted her sixth marker of the fall off a Meghan Williams (Greenland, N.H./St. Thomas Aquinas) pass at the 29:46 mark.

Cutler's quick strikes followed to lift the Royal Blue to a 6-0 cushion heading into intermission. Dumond opened the second-half scoring in the 38th minute before Cutler and Drew capped the offensive onslaught with markers in the 40th and 51st minutes, respectively.

Senior goalkeeper Brenna Santos (East Falmouth, Mass.) made 14 saves for Mount Ida, which is in its first year as an NCAA DIII varsity program. Sophomore netminder Emma Astbury (Bridgewater, Vt.) was untested in goal for the Monks.

Saint Joseph's owned a 34-1 advantage in shots and a 16-3 lead in penalty corners on the afternoon. The Monks' goal total in today's victory is the most since St. Joe's handled Wheelock College by the same score on October 1st, 2009.

The Monks have won eight-consecutive games with the last setback coming in overtime versus Kean University on September 14th. The win streak is tied for the longest in team history – the Monks rattled off eight straight victories to begin the season.

Saint Joseph's plays at Johnson & Wales University in a conference contest next Saturday while Mount Ida hosts Daniel Webster College on Tuesday at 3:30 PM.
