Monks Blank Mustangs, 7-0

NEWTON, Mass. – Mount Ida College opened its second Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) season at home on Saturday evening but suffered a 7-0 loss to Saint Joseph's College in a field hockey matchup at Alumni Field.

Sophomore Emily McConnell (Lowell, Mass.) made 17 stops for the Mustangs, who were outshot 34-4 by the Monks, with the visitors scoring three times in the opening half.

Senior Meghan Williams (Greenland, N.H.) scored twice, both on penalty strokes on either side of halftime, and added an assist to lead the Monks (2-1, 1-0 GNAC).

Freshman Michalia Parent (Westborough, Mass.) opened the scoring six minutes in with her third goal of the year when she picked up a loose ball in front of the net and beat McConnell to the stick side.

Williams got on the board with an assist to Kelsey Dumond (Lewiston, Maine), who scored her third goal of the year, and then Williams got to three tallies herself with penalty strokes in the 22nd and 41st minute.

Bailey Cutler (Lisbon Falls, Maine) tallied her second goal of the year ten minutes after Williams' second stroke with a backhand from the top of the arc, and Kayla Kelly (York, Maine) and Kara Kelly (York, Maine) each scored within nine minutes apart to cap the scoring for the Monks.

The Mustangs (1-4, 0-1 GNAC) got their only shot on goal from freshman Mattison Marcello (Windham, Maine), while Sarah Hemstock (Northford, Conn.) missed the cage on two attempts.

Saint Joseph's junior Emma Astbury (Bridgewater, Vt.) needed just one save to earn the shutout and improve to 1-1 on the year.

Mustang freshman Suzanne Thibault (Douglas, Mass.) contributed a defensive save to stop another attempt by the Monks offense, who put 25 shots on goal in the win.

Mount Ida goes for its first GNAC win on Thursday with a 4:00 pm road game at Anna Maria. Saint Joseph's hosts Rivier University on Saturday at 12:00 PM.
