Eagles Top Monks in OT, 1-0

STANDISH, Maine – Junior forward Lauren Russell (Saco, Maine) scored 3:05 into overtime to lift Husson University (3-3) to a 1-0 victory over Saint Joseph's College (3-5) at Mercy Field on Wednesday afternoon.

THE LEAD

Playing 7v7 in extra play, the Eagles took advantage of an odd-man break early in OT to secure the thrilling triumph, as Russell gained possession of the ball near midfield, dribbled through several defenders, and slammed a pair of shots on target. Saint Joseph's sophomore keeper Megan Baker (Gorham, Maine) stopped the first shot, but Russell fought to claim the rebound and lifted a shot high into the SJC cage for the win.

THE KEEPERS

Both goalies played very well in the non-conference contest, as Baker totaled six stops and made a handful of key plays outside of the goalmouth while her counterpart, Husson senior Kaitlin Dolloff (Richmond, R.I.) posted eight saves in notching her first shutout of the 2016 campaign.

TEAM STATS

Husson held an advantage in shots (15-10) while St. Joe's led in penalty corners (12-7) and both teams steered nine shots on goal on the afternoon.

NOTEWORTHY

  • Saint Joseph's sophomore Kayla Veilleux (Sabattus, Maine) made a pair of defensive saves
  • Husson sophomore Arika Brochu (Augusta, Maine) picked up her first defensive save of the season
  • In the second half, the Monks outshot the Eagles by a 6-5 margin and held a 9-3 lead in penalty corners

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING

With the loss, Saint Joseph's falls to 15-19 in the history of the series with Husson University. The former North Atlantic Conference (NAC) rivals are no strangers to overtime play, as seven of the last 14 meetings – dating back to the 2007 season – between the teams have required extra play to determine a winner. During the same time frame, 12 of the contests between the Monks and Eagles have been decided by one goal.

NEXT!

Both teams face off against Castleton State University in their next contest, as Husson hosts the Spartans in a 1:00 PM NAC contest on Saturday and the Monks host their former conference rival in a 1:00 PM start on Sunday.
