Pomerleau Scores Thrice, Monks Blank Sharks, 3-0

STANDISH, Maine – Freshman Libby Pomerleau (Limerick, Maine) scored three goals to help lift Saint Joseph's College (6-5, 3-1 GNAC) past Simmons College (7-5, 3-1 GNAC), 3-0, in a rematch of the 2015 GNAC Championship game at Mercy Field on Saturday.

THE LEAD

Pomerleau put the hosts on the board in the eighth minute when the freshman standout scored during a scrum in the goalmouth following a penalty corner. The 1-0 edge remained until the 47:25 mark when the first-year forward deflected a shot taken by junior Elyse Caiazzo (Scarborough, Maine/Cheverus). Less than four minutes later, Pomerleau struck again with a tally off a left-to-right cross from sophomore Kara Kelly (York, Maine) to account for the 3-0 final.

NEAR MISS

The Sharks had their best scoring opportunity – actually, opportunities – off a penalty corner in the 66th minute, when the visitors rattled off four close-range shots in a span of five seconds. St. Joe's sophomore defender Meghan Burke (Falmouth, Mass.) made a great defensive save on an attempt by junior Sammy Rondeau (Franklin, Mass.) and second-year keeper Megan Baker (Gorham, Maine) recorded three rapid-fire saves to keep the Sharks off the board.

THE KEEPERS

Baker capped the day with seven saves to collect her second-consecutive shutout while her counterpart, Simmons senior Brianna Rastello (Salem, N.H.), did not make a save in a losing effort. Sophomore Ana Giarrusso (Hingham, Mass.) registered a defensive save in the setback.

TEAM STATS

Saint Joseph's held the lead in shots (10-6) and penalty corners (13-3) while Simmons owned an 8-4 advantage in shots on goal in the conference contest.

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING

With the victory, Saint Joseph's improves to 15-8 all-time versus Simmons College, a team that tipped the Monks by a 1-0 score in the GNAC Championship game last fall. The shutout victory over the Sharks is the Monks' first since 2012.

NEXT!

Saint Joseph's travels to UMass.-Dartmouth on Monday for a 1:00 PM start versus the Corsairs while Simmons returns to action at Mount Holyoke College for a 7:00 PM start on Wednesday.
