Monks Blank Mustangs, Run Shutout Streak to Six Games

 STANDISH, Maine – Saint Joseph's College (9-5, 4-1 GNAC) defeated Mount Ida College (9-6, 1-4 GNAC), 4-0, in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) field hockey action at Mercy Field on Saturday.

THE LEAD

Senior Kelsey Dumond (Lewiston, Maine) and sophomore Kara Kelly (York, Maine) scored two goals apiece as Saint Joseph's outshot Mount Ida by a 36-3 margin in what was the Monks' sixth-consecutive shutout.

THE KEEPERS

Saint Joseph's sophomore netminder Megan Baker (Gorham, Maine) did not face a shot on goal in picking up her fifth shutout of the year. Mount Ida employed a pair of goalies in the setback, with starter Grace Ryan (Livermore Falls, Maine) posting seven saves in the first half and fellow freshman Jessica Henry (Wilbraham, Mass.) stopping three shots in the second stanza.

TEAM STATS

As previously mentioned, Saint Joseph's held a 36-3 shots advantage while holding a 15-0 lead in shots on goal and a 16-3 cushion in penalty corners.

NOTEWORTHY

  • Freshman forward Libby Pomerleau (Saco, Maine) assisted on both of Kelly's goals
  • Dumond broke the Monks' single-game shots record with 17 attempts in the victory – the previous mark – 16 – was set by TJ Cowin in an 8-0 win over Rivier University on September 25th, 2011

SENIOR MOMENT

Prior to the start of the contest, Saint Joseph's held a brief ceremony to honor the program's two seniors: Dumond and Danessa MacDonald, who has served as a team manager for each of her four years at the college.

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING

With the victory, Saint Joseph's improves to 3-0 in the history of the series with Mount Ida College. All three of the Monks' wins over the Mustangs have been of the shutout variety.

NEXT!

Saint Joseph's resumes play with a home non-conference contest versus Salem State University on Tuesday (3:00 PM). Mount Ida is back in action with a non-conference tilt at Colby-Sawyer College on Wednesday (3:30 PM).
