Saint Joseph’s Stops Springfield, 2-1

STANDISH, Maine – Saint Joseph's College (3-3) handed Springfield College (5-1) it's first loss of the season with a 2-1 victory over the Pride in non-conference field hockey action at the SJC Athletics Complex on Wednesday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Saint Joseph's sophomore forward Libby Pomerleau (Saco, Maine) kicked off the game scoring in the 15th minute when she potted her team-leading sixth goal of the season. Freshman Alexandra Belaire (Greene, Maine) set up the play with a flat pass and was credited with an assist on the tally. The Monks doubled their lead at the 27-minute mark when senior Hayley Winslow (Falmouth, Maine) scored off a penalty corner play. Junior Arianna Kahler (Lisbon Falls, Maine) found her fellow captain with a perfect pass from the top of the circle and Winslow tipped the ball in for her first game-winner of the fall.

Springfield got on the board on a corner play just 2:13 into the second half, as senior Maggie Kennedy (Clay, N.Y.) slammed home a rebound amidst chaos in front of the net. Senior Dani Sweet (Charlton, Mass.) assisted on the score.

THE KEEPERS:

SJC junior Megan Baker (Gorham, Maine) picked up the win after making three saves on the afternoon while Springfield junior Emmalie Drake (Pittsford, N.Y.) stopped four of the Monks' six attempts in a losing bid. Drake also received help from her defenders, as Sweet and freshman Tirzah McMillan (Haddonfield, N.J.) chipped in with a defensive save apiece.

Saint Joseph's held advantages in shots (10-6), shots on goal (8-4), and penalty corners (11-5) in the victory.
