STANDISH, Maine – Senior Hayley Winslow (Falmouth, Maine) scored in the 53rd minute to help lift Saint Joseph's College (13-5, 6-1 GNAC) past Plymouth State University (11-5, 8-3 LEC), 1-0, in non-conference field hockey action at the SJC Athletics Complex on Wednesday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
After a scoreless first half during which neither team recorded a true scoring opportunity, the Monks came out firing to the tune of a 12-5 shots advantage. Applying pressure in the offensive end, junior Arianna Kahler (Lisbon Falls, Maine) found Winslow, who was unmarked in the middle of the circle and drove a shot past Plymouth State keeper Alivia Bates (Pennsauken, N.J.) for what proved to be the game-winning goal.
THE KEEPERS:
SJC junior goalie Megan Baker (Gorham, Maine) made a pair of saves to notch her sixth shutout of the year and 19th of her collegiate career. Bates played well with nine saves in the losing effort.
TEAM STATS:
Saint Joseph's held advantages in shots (14-8) and shots on goal (11-2) while Plymouth State posted a 7-6 edge in penalty corners on the afternoon.
HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:
With the win Saint Joseph's improves to 5-4 all-time versus Plymouth State University and avenges a 2016 setback at the hands of the Panthers by the same 1-0 score.

Saint Joseph's caps the 2017 regular season with today's contest and, as the #2 seed in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Tournament, has earned a first-round bye. Next Wednesday, the Monks will host the winner of the #6 Anna Maria College / #3 Simmons College quarterfinal, start time TBD.
