Saint Joseph's Edges Skidmore in 2019 Opener, 2-1

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Saint Joseph's College (1-0) tipped Skidmore College (0-1), 2-1, in what was the 2019 season-opener for both teams on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Sophomore Meghan Hill (Brookline, N.H.) kicked off the scoring in the 19th minute when she cleaned up a rebound off an Emma Rutledge (Alfred, Maine) shot for her first goal of the season.

The Thoroughbreds answered seven minutes later when Sarah Winters hit pay dirt on a penalty corner attempt off assists from Sofia Marshall and Carrie Hughes.

Freshman Megan Quirion (Oakland, Maine) netted what proved to be the game-winning goal at the 33:20 mark off a long ball.

TEAM STATS:

Skidmore – which received votes in the NFHCA Preseason Coaches Poll - held advantages in shots (21-10), shots on goal (13-8), and penalty corners (15-8) in a losing effort.

THE KEEPERS:

Saint Joseph's junior Alexandria Simpson (Pascoag, R.I.) was outstanding in her first collegiate start between the pipes with 11 saves in the victory.

Skidmore keeper Jess Gaetgens posted four stops in the setback.

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:

Saint Joseph's is now 2-1 all-time versus Skidmore College and, including a 3-2 at the SJC Athletics Complex last fall, has defeated the Thoroughbreds in consecutive meetings.

Saint Joseph's will play at Wellesley College tomorrow at 12:00 PM.
