STANDISH, Maine – #14 Babson College (2-1) edged Saint Joseph's College (3-1), 1-0, in a non-conference field hockey contest at the SJC Athletics Complex on Saturday afternoon. The matchup versus the Beavers was the Monks' 2019 home-opener.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Both teams had scoring chances early with plenty of back and forth play in the opening quarter, but Babson took advantage of an SJC defensive lapse in the 14th minute when sophomore Lauren Curley (Stow, Mass.) netted the game's lone goal. Senior Kate Driscoll (Milton, Mass.) evaded several Monk defenders in the right corner and fed Curley, who was unmarked near the left goal post and slammed a one-timer into the empty side of the cage.

THE KEEPERS:

Saint Joseph's junior Alexandria Simpson (Pascoag, R.I.) turned in another solid performance with nine stops in a losing effort while Babson sophomore netminder Cassidy Riley (Catonsville, Md.) turned away the three shots she faced in the shutout triumph.

TEAM STATS:

Babson held the lead in shots (12-9) and shots on goal (10-3) while St. Joe's registered a 7-5 penalty corner advantage on the afternoon.

NOTEWORTHY:

Babson is ranked 14th in the nation, according to the 2019 NFHCA Preseason Poll.

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:

Today's match-up was the first ever between the Saint Joseph's and Babson field hockey programs.

Saint Joseph's is off until next Wednesday when the Monks host in-state rival University of Southern Maine in an 8:00 PM start. Babson will host University of New England on Tuesday at 6:00 PM.
