STANDISH, Maine – Saint Joseph's College (5-1, 1-0 GNAC) defeated Regis College (1-3, 0-1 GNAC), 4-1, in what was the 2019 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) opener for both teams at the SJC Athletics Complex on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

All five of the teams' goals came in the third and fourth quarters, as the conference rivals followed two scoreless frames with a scoring barrage in the latter periods. Freshman Megan Quirion (Oakland, Maine) ignited the Monks' offense with her second goal of the season, which was scored off an assist from sophomore Emma Rutledge (Alfred, Maine) in the 32nd minute.

Rutledge found the back of the cage herself 10 minutes later with an unassisted tally, but Regis cut the SJC cushion in half when freshman Amelia Thomas (Hopkinton, N.H.) hit pay dirt off a Mary Constantino (Abington, Mass.) pass at the 51:27 mark.

The close contest did not remain so for long, as senior Libby Pomerleau (Limerick, Maine) and Rutledge closed out the game scoring with goals in the 56th and 58th minutes, respectively.

TEAM STATS:

Saint Joseph's held the lead in shots (17-6), shots on goal (8-5), and penalty corners (9-5) in the GNAC triumph.

THE KEEPERS:

SJC junior Alexandra Simpson (Pascoag, R.I.) and Regis junior Hope Winkin (Winslow, Maine) made four saves apiece in the conference opener.

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:

Saint Joseph's is now 7-4 all-time versus Regis College and has defeated the Pride in five-consecutive meetings.

The Monks continue their six-game homestand with a 4:30 PM non-conference tilt versus UMaine-Farmington.
