STANDISH, Maine – Saint Joseph's College (10-2, 4-0 GNAC) blanked Rivier University (5-7, 2-2 GNAC), 3-0, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) field hockey matchup at the SJC Athletics Complex on Saturday.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The conference contest was a scoreless stalemate until the 22nd minute, when senior Libby Pomerleau (Limerick, Maine) netted her fifth goal of the season off a penalty corner. Junior Alexandra Belaire (Greene, Maine) was credited with an assist on what proved to be the game-winning tally.
Freshman Alexa Gutowski (Conway, N.H.) made it a 2-0 game with her seventh strike of the year off a corner and an Emma Rutledge (Alfred, Maine) pass at the 40:31 mark. Rutledge netted the Monks' last marker of the afternoon 15 minutes later with freshman Aimee Adams (Gardiner, Maine) assisting on the sophomore's seventh goal of the year.
THE KEEPERS:
SJC junior Alexandria Simpson (Pascoag, R.I.) turned away the only shot she faced in the shutout performance while Rivier sophomore goalie Katie Olsen (Saugus, Mass.) notched eight saves in the losing bid.
TEAM STATS:
Saint Joseph's held considerable leads in shots (16-1), shots on goal (11-1), and penalty corners (13-1) on the afternoon.
HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:
Saint Joseph's is now 11-0 all-time versus Rivier University and has notched seven straight shutouts versus their conference counterpart, a clean sheet string that began during the 2013 campaign.
