STANDISH, Maine - #17 Colby College (8-3) defeated Saint Joseph's College (11-3), 5-1, in a non-conference field hockey matchup at the SJC Athletics Complex on Wednesday evening.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Monks kicked off the scoring when Emma Rutledge (Alfred, Maine) cleaned up a rebound on her own attempt at the 17:40 mark for her eighth goal of the season.
The 1-0 lead lasted just four minutes however, as Colby – ranked 17th nationally in the latest National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Poll – rattled off three goals in a matter of three minutes to claim a 3-1 lead and transform the complexion of the game.
Junior Myri Skodock (Mechlenburg-Pommerania, Germany), freshman Kaitlyn Smith (Belgrade, Maine), and senior Eliza Mell (Far Hills, N.J.) provided the visitors with three strikes in quick succession to account for the 3-1 cushion.
The Mules controlled possession for the better part of the game and tacked on goals from Georgia Cassidy (Darien, Conn.) and Smith in the third and fourth frames, respectively.
THE KEEPERS:
In goal, junior Alexandria Simpson (Pascoag, R.I.) recorded eight saves in the loss while senior Emily Buckman (Chatham, N.J.) notched four stops for the visitors.
