NEWTON, Mass. – Saint Joseph's College (12-3, 5-0 GNAC) shut down Lasell University (7-8, 4-2 GNAC), 3-0, in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) field hockey play on Saturday afternoon.

The game, which pitted the two teams who have faced off in each of the last two GNAC Championship contests, was packed with playoff implications as all conference teams enter the final stretch of the regular season and the tournament picture comes into focus.

The Monks are the only undefeated team in GNAC play this fall and have three conference games remaining: Anna Maria, Johnson & Wales, and Colby-Sawyer. All three teams are currently 3-2 in league play.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

After a scoreless first period, the visitors broke through with the first goal of the game as freshman Megan Quirion (Oakland, Maine) redirected a crossing pass from sophomore Megan Hill (Brookline, N.H.) with 4:26 to go in the first half.

The Monks doubled their lead midway through the third period following a penalty corner as junior Alexandra Belaire (Greene, Maine) fired a ball from the left side, and freshman Alexa Gutowski (Conway, N.H.) bunted the loose ball out of midair near the far post into a wide-open goal.

Freshman Sophia Jacques (Peru, Maine) closed out the scoring in the final minute of the game, knocking home a rebound from the left side after Lasell reserve goalie Chloe Shugrue (Worcester, Mass.) had made back-to-back saves.

THE KEEPERS:

Saint Joseph's junior Alexandria Simpson (Pascoag, R.I.) recorded three saves to notch her third shutout of the year while Lasell starter Sofia Rodriguez (Peabody, Mass.) turned away five shots before giving way to Shugrue, who finished with three saves in the final four minutes.

TEAM STATS:

The Monks held the lead in shots (17-3), shots on goal (11-3), and penalty corners (11-4) in the victory.

NOTEWORTHY:

With the win, the Monks extend their winning streak versus conference opponents to 18 games (regular & postseason) – the team's last loss to a GNAC foe was a 2-1 setback at the hands of Lasell on October 7th, 2017.

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:

Saint Joseph's is now 19-4 all-time versus Lasell University and has defeated the Lasers in four-consecutive meetings dating back to the 2017 season.

NEXT!

Saint Joseph's returns to action on Thursday with a 3:30 PM conference contest at Anna Maria College.
