NEW LONDON, N.H. – October 30, 2019 – The Colby-Sawyer field hockey team dropped a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) regular season finale to Saint Joseph's College of Maine, 4-2, on Wednesday afternoon.

As the top seed in the six-team GNAC Tournament, the Monks have earned a bye in the first round of the playoffs, which begins this Saturday with a quarterfinal round. Saint Joseph's, 16-3 overall and 7-0 versus GNAC foes, will take on the winner of the #4 Anna Maria / #5 Regis quarterfinal in a semifinal on Wednesday, time TBD.

Colby-Sawyer was one of five teams to finish the regular season with a 4-4 GNAC record and, as announced by the conference office this evening, has missed the tourney cut due to a series of tiebreakers involving head-to-head matchups.

Colby-Sawyer was just the third team this season to score at least two goals against the Monks.

The home team wasted little time to go in front, 1-0, when senior Alie Jones (Cape Neddick, Maine) scored off an assist from junior Sarah Morin (Pelham, N.H.) 2:16 into the first quarter.

The Chargers would take the one-goal advantage late into the second frame before Saint Joseph's knotted the score. Junior Alexandra Belaire (Greene, Maine) set up senior teammate Maddy Beaulieu (West Gardiner, Maine) for her second tally of the season.

Colby-Sawyer regained the lead with less than three minutes to play in the half on first-year Bella Silva's (Danvers, Mass.) second goal of the season.

Neither team could find the back of the cage in the third quarter as the score remined 2-1 in favor of the Chargers after 45 minutes.

Saint Joseph's then tilted the field in their direction in the fourth quarter. The Monks outshot Colby-Sawyer 7-0 and took advantage of a 9-1 discrepancy in penalty corners. 

First-year Sophia Jacques (Peru, Maine) notched the equalizer on an unassisted goal, five minutes into the fourth.

Two minutes later, Jacques inserted the ball on a penalty corner to the top of the circle. Belaire took a step inside the circle and sent an aerial up and over everyone into the back of the goal.

Saint Joseph's added an insurance goal in the 54th minute off the stick of the team's leading goal scorer Emma Rutledge (Alfred, Maine). Beaulieu set up Rutledge for her 12th goal of the season.

Monks goalie Alexandria Simpson (Pascoag, R.I.) had three stops to earn the win. Colby-Sawyer junior Abby Ladd (Colchester, Vt.) made eight saves in the loss.
