Monks Place Third in UMF Invitational

STANDISH, ME - The Saint Joseph's College golf team placed third with 321 strokes in the UMF Invitational at Sunday River Golf Club on Thursday. Jake Brown '13 (Lewiston, Maine) paced the Royal Blue with a career-low 79 card (40-39) in the 18-hole event.

With the assistance of the tournament's top two scorers, Husson University bested runner-up University of New England by 20 strokes with a 301 team card in the annual event. Seniors Chris Hamel (Waterville, Maine) and Mike Hersey (Presque Isle, Maine) finished tied atop the individual leaderboard with 72 (35-37) cards to help the Eagles win the UMF Invitational for the 12th consecutive season.

For St. Joe's, Steve Simonds '15 (Steep Falls, Maine) shot an 82 (38-44) in his first collegiate tourney and Kevin Richardson '14 (Coventry, Conn.) carded an 83 (43-40). Handing in 84 cards at the end of the day were Ebb Walton '12 (Blue Hill, Maine) (41-43) and Jeff Hilton '13 (42-42).

Rounding out the group of nine participating institutions were USM (333), Maine-Farmington (339), Maine-Presque Isle (339), Bowdoin (343), Maine Maritime (364) and Bates (366).

Saint Joseph's will participate in the State of Maine Championship at Val Halla Golf and Recreation Center in Cumberland this coming Saturday (11:00 AM) and Sunday (10:00 AM).
