NEWRY, ME – The Saint Joseph's College golf team placed sixth with a 326 team card in the UMaine-Farmington Invitational at the Sunday Rivier Golf Course on Thursday. Freshman Mike Caron (Gorham, Maine) paced the Monks with a 77 (34-43) card and finished 10th out of 40 golfers in the event.
Husson University walked away with the team title, posting a 296 card to finish 22 strokes ahead of runner-up Southern Maine. Maine Maritime Academy (319), Maine-Farmington (320), University of New England (323), Saint Joseph's, Bates College (351) and Thomas College (356) rounded out the eight-team field.
The Eagles cruised to the crown by placing all four scorers in the top seven and the top three finishers overall, including Bill Hutchins, who claimed medalist accolades with a 72 card after shooting an even par 36 on the front and back of the 6,558-yard course. Husson linkers Porter Gervais (74, 39-35) and Greg Martin (74, 39-35) placed second and third, respectively, while UMF golfer Joe Messerman (75, 37-38) and Adam Bedard (75, 37-38) of Thomas closed out the top five individual finishers.
For Saint Joseph's, senior Kevin Richardson (Coventry, Conn.) shot a 78 (40-38) to finish 13th, sophomore Ryan Berard (Millville, Mass.) carded an 85 (41-44), senior Colin Finn (North Easton, Mass.) placed 30th (86, 4-42) and freshman John Marcous (Turner, Maine/St. Dominic) was 34th (90, 44-46).
Saint Joseph's will participate in the Maine Collegiate Championship at the Bangor Municipal Golf Course this weekend. Opening tee-time for Saturday is slated for 10:00 AM.
