Rookie Caron Claims Queenan Medalist Honors

CASCO, ME – Husson University posted a 316 team card to win the 11th Annual John Queenan Memorial Tournament at Point Sebago Golf Resort on Tuesday afternoon. Saint Joseph's College freshman Michael Caron (Gorham, Maine) claimed medalist honors with a 74 card in the 18-hole event.

Featuring four of the top seven individual finishers, Husson cruised to victory with a 316 collective card, 12 strokes ahead of runner-up University of Southern Maine. Saint Joseph's finished third with a 334 score, University of New England placed fourth (340), University of Maine-Farmington was fifth (353) and Thomas College rounded out the field with a 396 team score.

The Queenan Tournament victory is the Eagles' eighth in the last nine years. UNE broke the Husson string by besting the Eagles with a 320 card in 2010.

Caron is the first SJC golfer to win the annual event, which has been hosted by Saint Joseph's since 2003. His 74 card is the second-lowest recorded by St. Joe's linker, one stroke away from the 73 cards posted by Francois Renaud '08 (2004) and Chris Deroche '08 (2007).

For the Monks, senior Kevin Richardson (Coventry, Conn.) posted an 82 card, senior Colin Finn (North Easton, Mass.) turned in an 88, sophomore Ryan Berard (Millville, Mass.) shot a 90, and junior David Kapelson (Litchfield, N.H.) carded a 92.

Southern Maine senior AJ Simokaitis (Falmouth, Maine) claimed runner-up honors with a 77 card, Husson seniors Lance Bernier (Lincoln, Maine) and Porter Gervais (New Limerick, Maine) and USM freshman Zack DeBlois (Auburn, Maine) all turned in a 78 score to finish in a tie for third and round out the top five individuals.

The yearly tournament is named in memory of John Queenan, a 2003 graduate of Bow High School who died tragically in an automobile accident just prior to the beginning of his freshman year at Saint Joseph's.

The Monks will compete in the Southern Maine Cup at the Gorham Country Club on Friday. Tee-time is slated for 12:00 PM in the yearly event, which features pairs of golfers playing six holes of best ball, followed by six holes of scramble format and finally six holes of alternate shot golf.
