Monks Place Fifth, Caron Posts Runner-up Finish

GORHAM, ME – Saint Joseph's College placed fifth out of nine programs with a 633 (311-322) team card in the two-day University of Southern Maine Fall Classic at the Gorham Country Club.

Freshman Michael Caron (Gorham, Maine) led the field after the first 18 holes with a 70 score and capped the 36-hole event with a 144 card, which placed him in a tie with UMass.-Dartmouth's Brendan Kelleher. Prior to the start of the tourney, coaches agreed upon utilizing a match of card to determine the medalist rather than going with the traditional sudden-death playoff. As a result, Caron was forced to settle as the runner-up while Kelleher collected the medalist award.

With a 609 collective card, the Corsairs edged out Endicott College by one stroke to claim top team honors as well. Husson University remained in the hunt for the duration and closed out the event with a 611 score while Southern Maine (617), Saint Joseph's (633), Saint Anselm's (642), University of New England (644), Emmanuel College (655) and Maine-Farmington (681) also participated in the event.

For the Monks, senior Kevin Richardson (Coventry, Conn.) shot a 155 (81-77), sophomore Ryan Berard (Millville, Mass.) posted a 163 (78-85) card and senior Colin Finn (North Easton, Mass.) carded a 170 (84-86). Senior Jake Brown (Lewiston, Maine) shot an 82 on Sunday but did not play on Monday.

Caron's score counts as the second-lowest 36-hole card over the last 15 years. Only Jim Ross '03, who collected 2001 Maine Athletic Conference Championship medalist honors with a 143 score, has notched a lower two-day card since 1999.

Saint Joseph's is off until Saturday, October 19th when the team begins play in the two-day Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Championship at the Cranston Country Club in Rhode Island.
